Formal and informal home learning activities in relation to children’s early numeracy and literacy skills: The development of a home numeracy model

Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2014
The purpose of this study was to propose and test a model of children's home numeracy experience based on Sénéchal and LeFevre's home literacy model (Child Development, 73 (2002) 445-460). Parents of 183 children starting kindergarten in the fall (median child age=58 months) completed an early home learning experiences questionnaire.

Causal Effects of an Ecologically Valid Home Numeracy Intervention on Preschoolers' Numeracy Skills

open access: yesChild Development
Abstract The home numeracy environment is suggested to influence children's numerical development, but causal evidence for this assertion remains limited. Addressing this gap, we randomly assigned 117 predominantly White 4–5-year-olds (M = 4.68 years, SD = 0.2, 47% girls) attending preschool in Flanders (Belgium) to either an ...

The home math environment: More than numeracy

Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2020
Abstract The goal of the current study is to develop a more complete understanding of the early home math environment, encompassing both numeracy and non-numeracy aspects of that environment. Parents of preschoolers (n = 63) were surveyed about their support of three components of early mathematics knowledge (i.e., numeracy, spatial, and pattern) as ...

Numeracy and Home Blood Pressure Measurement Reporting

open access: yes, 2014

Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM), a valuable tool in predicting CVD risk and end-organ damage independent of office BPs, requires the self-measurement and reporting of numerical health information and may be ...

Do home numeracy and literacy practices of Greek and Canadian parents predict the numeracy skills of kindergarten children?

International Journal of Early Years Education, 2010
Children’s experiences with early numeracy and literacy activities are a likely source of individual differences in their preparation for academic learning in school. What factors predict differences in children’s experiences? We hypothesised that relations between parents’ practices and children’s numeracy skills would mediate the relations between ...
