Effects of engineered nanoparticles on the innate immune system

open access: yesSeminars in Immunology, 2017
Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have broad applications in industry and nanomedicine. When NPs enter the body, interactions with the immune system are unavoidable. The innate immune system, a non-specific first line of defense against potential threats to

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The immune system as drug target [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The immune system is perhaps the largest yet most diffuse and distributed somatic system in vertebrates. It plays vital roles in fighting infection and in the homeostatic control of chronic disease.

Multi-receptor detection of individual bacterial products by the innate immune system

open access: yesNature reviews. Immunology, 2017
The receptors of the innate immune system detect specific microbial ligands to promote effective inflammatory and adaptive immune responses. Although this idea is well appreciated, studies in recent years have highlighted the complexity of innate immune ...

Targeting innate immune pathways for cancer immunotherapy

open access: yesImmunity, 2023
The innate immune system is critical for inducing durable and protective T cell responses to infection, and has been increasingly recognized as a target for cancer immunotherapy.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Biochemical and functional studies on mouse ficolin-B, a novel pattern recognition molecule of the innate immune system

open access: yes, 2011
Ficolins are members of the collectin family of proteins which in human and mice are able to recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on microbial surfaces.

The chemotherapeutic agent DMXAA as a unique IRF3-dependent type-2 vaccine adjuvant [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
5,6-Dimethylxanthenone-4-acetic acid (DMXAA), a potent type I interferon (IFN) inducer, was evaluated as a chemotherapeutic agent in mouse cancer models and proved to be well tolerated in human cancer clinical trials.

Innate immunity in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: recent advances

open access: yesFrontiers in Pain Research
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common dose-limiting side effect in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Many commonly used chemotherapeutic agents simultaneously induce neurotoxicity and modulate the immune system.
