Integrated miRNA-/mRNA-Seq of the Habenulo-Interpeduncular Circuit During Acute Nicotine Withdrawal

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of mortality in the world. The limited number of smoking cessation aids currently available are minimally effective, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic interventions.

GABAB receptor auxiliary subunits modulate Cav2.3-mediated release from medial habenula terminals

open access: yeseLife, 2021
The synaptic connection from medial habenula (MHb) to interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) is critical for emotion-related behaviors and uniquely expresses R-type Ca2+ channels (Cav2.3) and auxiliary GABAB receptor (GBR) subunits, the K+-channel tetramerization

Neuromeric Distribution of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate-Diaphorase Activity in the Adult Lamprey Brain

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroanatomy, 2022
This study reports for the first time the distribution and morphological characterization of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d; a reliable marker of nitric oxide synthase activity) positive elements in the central nervous ...

Fetal Medial Habenula Transplants: Innervation of the Rat Interpeduncular Nucleus [PDF]

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 1989
The effects of donor age and site of placement on the survival of fetal medial habenula (MH) transplants into adult rats hosts were examined. The innervation of the interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) in such cases was also examined. Explants of MH consisting of the medial‐dorsal lip of the third ventricle were held in vitro for 1—2 days.

Mapping of neurokinin-like immunoreactivity in the human brainstem

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2003
Background Using an indirect immunoperoxidase technique, we have studied the distribution of immunoreactive fibers and cell bodies containing neurokinin in the adult human brainstem with no prior history of neurological or psychiatric disease.

An Evolutionary Hypothesis of Binary Opposition in Functional Incompatibility about Habenular Asymmetry in Vertebrates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Many vertebrates have asymmetrical circuits in the nervous system. There are two types of circuit asymmetry. Asymmetrical circuits in sensory and/or motor systems are usually related to lateralized behaviors.

Griseum centrale, a homologue of the periaqueductal gray in the lamprey

open access: yesIBRO Reports, 2017
Fear, a response to threatening stimuli and important for survival, is a behavior found throughout the animal kingdom. One critical structure involved in the expression of fear-related behavior is the periaqueductal gray (PAG) in mammals, and in the ...

Understanding the habenula: A major node in circuits regulating emotion and motivation

open access: yesPharmacological Research, 2023
Over the last decade, the understanding of the habenula has rapidly advanced from being an understudied brain area with the Latin name ‘habena” meaning “little rein”, to being considered a “major rein” in the control of key monoaminergic brain centers ...
