MobiDB: intrinsically disordered proteins in 2021 [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2020
AbstractThe MobiDB database (URL: https://mobidb.org/) provides predictions and annotations for intrinsically disordered proteins. Here, we report recent developments implemented in MobiDB version 4, regarding the database format, with novel types of annotations and an improved update process.

Abundance Imparts Evolutionary Constraints of Similar Magnitude on the Buried, Surface, and Disordered Regions of Proteins

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2021
An understanding of the forces shaping protein conservation is key, both for the fundamental knowledge it represents and to allow for optimal use of evolutionary information in practical applications. Sequence conservation is typically examined at one of

Calcium-Binding Proteins with Disordered Structure and Their Role in Secretion, Storage, and Cellular Signaling

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2018
Calcium is one of the most important second messengers and its intracellular signaling regulates many aspects of cell physiology. Calcium ions, like phosphate ions, are highly charged and thus are able to alter protein conformation upon binding; thereby ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Self‐recognition by an intrinsically disordered protein [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 2008
The intrinsically disordered translocation domain (T‐domain) of the protein antibiotic colicin N binds to periplasmic receptors of target Escherichia coli cells in order to penetrate their inner membranes. We report here that the specific 27 consecutive residues of the T‐domain of colicin N known to bind to the helper protein TolA in target cells also ...

Abundance of intrinsic disorder in SV-IV, a multifunctional androgen-dependent protein secreted from rat seminal vesicle

open access: yes, 2007
The potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and procoagulant properties of the protein no. 4 secreted from the rat seminal vesicle epithelium (SV-IV) have been previously found to be modulated by a supramolecular monomer-trimer ...

Modeling intrinsic spirituality in gambling disorder

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Spirituality is related to an individual’s relationship with a Transcendent Being or Ultimate Reality, which may contribute to salutary human experience and serve as a motive for attitudes and behaviors. In contrast to studies in the field of

Dual-Family Peptidylprolyl Isomerases (Immunophilins) of Select Monocellular Organisms

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2018
The dual-family peptidylprolyl cis-trans isomerases (immunophilins) represent a naturally occurring chimera of the classical FK506-binding protein (FKBP) and cyclophilin (CYN), connected by a flexible linker.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Functional Diversity and Structural Disorder in the Human Ubiquitination Pathway

open access: yes, 2013
The ubiquitin-proteasome system plays a central role in cellular regulation and protein quality control (PQC). The system is built as a pyramid of increasing complexity, with two E1 (ubiquitin activating), few dozen E2 (ubiquitin conjugating) and several
