Current Review of Iron Overload and Related Complications in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Hematology, 2017
Iron overload is an adverse prognostic factor for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In the HSCT setting, pretransplant and early posttransplant ferritin and transferrin saturation were found to be highly elevated due to ...

Curcumin Attenuates Iron Accumulation and Oxidative Stress in the Liver and Spleen of Chronic Iron-Overloaded Rats. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Iron overload is now recognized as a health problem in industrialized countries, as excessive iron is highly toxic for liver and spleen. The potential use of curcumin as an iron chelator has not been clearly identified experimentally in iron overload ...

Baroreflex function in conscious rats submitted to iron overload [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Our hypothesis is that iron accumulated in tissue, rather than in serum, may compromise cardiovascular control. Male Fischer 344 rats weighing 180 to 220 g were divided into 2 groups.

Iron Overload in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Complicated by Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: A Case Report

open access: yesCase Reports in Oncology, 2020
Iron overload is commonly seen in the context of hematological diseases in patients who require frequent transfusions. On the other hand, an association between autoimmune hemolytic anemia complicating chronic lymphocytic leukemia and iron overload is ...

Iron chelating agents for iron overload diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Although iron is an essential element for life, an excessive amount may become extremely toxic both for its ability to generate reactive oxygen species, and for the lack in humans of regulatory mechanisms for iron excretion.

Microglial dynamics and ferroptosis induction in human iPSC‐derived neuron–astrocyte–microglia tri‐cultures

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A tri‐culture of iPSC‐derived neurons, astrocytes, and microglia treated with ferroptosis inducers as an Induced ferroptosis model was characterized by scRNA‐seq, cell survival, and cytokine release assays. This analysis revealed diverse microglial transcriptomic changes, indicating that the system captures key aspects of the complex cellular ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

Effect of iron overload on the severity of liver histologic alterations and on the response to interferon and ribavirin therapy of patients with hepatitis C infection

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2006
The objective of the present study was to determine the presence of hepatic iron overload in patients with chronic HCV infection and to correlate it with histologic alterations, HCV genotype and response to therapy.

Evidence of Iron Accumulation in Cerebral Adrenoleukodystrophy: A Potential Novel Disease Mechanism

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this first application of Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Source Separation to cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, we uncovered alterations in iron and myelin within lesions and normal appearing white matter. As validation, we demonstrate abnormal iron accumulation in those same compartments within primary brain tissue.

Iron Overload in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

open access: yesAdvances in Hematology, 2010
Recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) frequently have iron overload resulting from chronic transfusion therapy for anemia. In some cases, for example, in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes and thalassemia, this can be further ...
