The History of the Discovery of Vitamin K

open access: yesBasic &Clinical Pharmacology &Toxicology, Volume 139, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Vitamin K was discovered during the 1930s when a strange haemorrhagic disorder was observed in chickens fed a cholesterol‐free diet. A fat‐soluble agent, present in green leafy vegetables and hog liver, was able to restore haemostasis in the chickens.

Atorvastatin Reduces Alcohol‐Related Cardiac and Liver Tissue Damage, Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, Apoptosis, and Thiol‐Disulfide Imbalance in Rats

open access: yesJournal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology, Volume 40, Issue 8, August 2026.
Atorvastatin (40 mg/kg) inhibited fibrosis, hypertrophy, apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress caused by alcohol consumption. It may contribute to the regulation of mitochondrial function and thiol/disulfide balance by limiting alcohol‐related heart and liver damage.

Differentiation of Plant and Animal‐Derived Cholesterol Using irm‐13C NMR and IRMS

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Chemistry, Volume 64, Issue 8, Page 701-708, August 2026.
Determining and certifying the origin of ingredients, starting materials, and excipients used in manufactured goods like cosmetics and medicines can be difficult. In this report, we describe a robust approach for identifying the origin of cholesterol, a component of myriad consumer products using irm‐13C NMR and IRMS to differentiate plant versus ...

Carotenoids From Amazonian Fruits as Functional Pigments in Active and Intelligent Food Packaging: Materials, Stability, and Technological Performance

open access: yesJournal of Food Science, Volume 91, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Amazonian fruits represent an underexplored source of carotenoids with high technological, functional, and economic potential for applications in food packaging. In recent years, active and intelligent packaging systems based on biopolymers and natural pigments have emerged as effective strategies for extending shelf life, monitoring food ...

Iron Physiology and Its Impact on Atopic Diseases: An EAACI Taskforce Report

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 8, Page 2675-2712, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Iron is essential for oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and immune regulation. Yet iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient disorder across all age groups, affecting nearly one quarter of the global population. Iron deficiency triggers nutritional immunity, a host defense mechanism that withholds and redistributes iron, contributing

Towards an integrated molecular understanding of plant hormones

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, Volume 68, Issue 8, Page 2787-2826, August 2026.
This review offers a comprehensive overview of the nine plant hormones, delving into their biosynthesis, transport, signaling and crosstalk mechanisms. Because the complexity of plant hormonal control goes beyond these core elements, additional specific features are discussed. Lastly, this review highlights how fundamental insights drive hormonal‐based

Distinct Adrenal Medulla Activity in Germ‐Free Versus Conventional Male Rats Under Acute and Chronic Stress

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 8, August 2026.
The study investigates the influence of gut microbiota on adrenal responses to stress in male rats, comparing germ‐free (GF) and specific pathogen‐free (SPF) models. The results show that stress caused a significant increase in epinephrine production in GF rats.

Natural variation in OsMYB305 downregulating cytokinin‐mediated inhibition of leaf senescence contributes to regional adaptation in rice

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 4, Page 1873-1888, August 2026.
Proposed regulatory model of OsMYB305 in leaf senescence. Summary Accumulating evidence has identified transcription factors (TFs) as key regulators of the onset and progression of leaf senescence. However, the regulatory role of the rice myeloblastosis (MYB) TF OsMYB305 in this process remains largely unknown.

Exploring the Isoprenoid Biosynthesis Pathway’s Role in Oncogenic Viruses

open access: yesViruses
Oncogenic viruses, which are causative for some cancers, are typically acquired in youth and suppressed until older age. These malignancies account for over 10% of the cancer burden and often reprogram cellular metabolic pathways to promote their own ...

Vestigial Plastids in Parasitic Plants: Evolutionary Remnants or Adaptive Innovations?

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 49, Issue 8, Page 5401-5420, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Throughout the evolutionary history of plants, chloroplasts originating from a cyanobacterial endosymbiosis have undergone remarkable adaptation and specialization, giving rise to a multitude of plastid types. The evolution toward parasitism in plants represents a particularly extreme case of such specialization.
