Murine T Cell‐Dependent Response Affects Leishmania amazonensis Amastigote Survival and Virulence

open access: yesCell Biology International, Volume 50, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Our group has previously described the infection course of Leishmania amazonensis in BALB/c and BALB/cnu/nu mice, which have distinct T‐cell dependent responses. In this study, lesion‐derived amastigotes exhibited differential protein expression in a host‐dependent manner.

Exploring Biological Properties of Manganese(II)‐Phenanthroline‐Based Complexes: In Vitro Insights

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 29, 3 August 2026.
Four Mn(II) complexes with phenanthroline derivatives were studied. These compounds were tested against several parasites and different human cancer cells. Despite its cytotoxicity on breast cancer, DNA seems not to be the main biological target. These complexes can drive the design and development of new metal‐based agents with improved biological ...

Identification of a Benzenesulfonylpiperazine Derivative With In Vivo Efficacy Against Visceral Leishmaniasis

open access: yesChemical Biology &Drug Design, Volume 108, Issue 2, August 2026.
This work highlights the satisfactory pharmacokinetic profile of two benzenesulfonylpiperazine lead candidates, followed by in vivo assessment in a murine model of visceral leishmaniasis. This assessment identified compound 2 as moderately active at a lower dose, but its efficacy increased at higher doses, though with concerns regarding safety.

Fusion between Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania major parasitophorous vacuoles: live imaging of coinfected macrophages. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2010
Protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania alternate between flagellated, elongated extracellular promastigotes found in insect vectors, and round-shaped amastigotes enclosed in phagolysosome-like Parasitophorous Vacuoles (PVs) of infected mammalian ...

Thymus and Leishmania at the Crossroads: Autoimmunity and Cancer

open access: yesImmunology, Volume 178, Issue 3, Page 377-386, July 2026.
Conceptual ‘Crossroads Model’ linking Leishmania, thymic infection and immune dysregulation: an integrative model is proposed in which Leishmania infection disrupts thymic architecture and stromal–thymocyte interactions. These alterations converge to promote defective tolerance, increased autoimmune risk and a microenvironment permissive to malignant ...

Multifunctional Oregano‐Derived Plasma Polymer Coatings for Wound Healing Applications: An In Vitro Study

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 23, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Chronic wounds, exacerbated by infection, aging, diabetes, and oxidative stress, remain a significant challenge in clinical management and impose a substantial burden on healthcare systems. This study presents oregano‐derived plasma polymers (OPP) as a multifunctional surface coating for advanced wound healing applications.

Phototoxic effect of aluminium-chlorine and aluminium-hydroxide phthalocyanines on Leishmania (l.) amazonensis

open access: yesPhotodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy, 2018
This study investigated the activity of photosensitive phthalocyanines on promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis. Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride (AlPcCl), Aluminum phthalocyanine hydroxide (AlPcOH) and zinc phthalocyanine (PcZn) were tested in the presence (matte red LED, potency of 2.5-2.3 μW for 30 min) and absence of light ...

VAPA mediates lipid exchange between Leishmania amazonensis and host macrophages.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens
Leishmania is a vacuolar pathogen that replicates within parasitophorous vacuoles inside host phagocytes. To promote its replication, Leishmania relies on a panoply of strategies to acquire macromolecules such as lipids from host macrophages.

Potential vectors of Leishmaniases in the Environmental Protection Area and Tinguá Federal Biological Reserve, Municipality of Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 246-259, June 2026.
This study was to describe the composition of sand fly fauna, detect potential vectors of Leishmania spp. in the Tinguá district, an ATL endemic, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Seven species of vectorial importance in the epidemiological cycle of leishmaniasis was observed: Nyssomyia intermedia, Migonemyia migonei, Pintomyia fischeri, Psychodopygus hirsutus ...
