Exploring metabolic dysfunction in chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Impaired kidney function and chronic kidney disease (CKD) leading to kidney failure and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a serious medical condition associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and in particular cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk ...

Insulin resistance, leptin and adiponectin in lean and hypothyroid children and adolescents with obesity

open access: yesBMC Pediatrics, 2022
Background Obesity usually complicates hypothyroidism. Adipokines like leptin and adiponectin secreted by adipose tissue modulate insulin resistance (IR), appetite, and obesity.

Anti-Obesity Effect of Chitosan Oligosaccharide Capsules (COSCs) in Obese Rats by Ameliorating Leptin Resistance and Adipogenesis

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2018
Obesity is a global disease that causes many metabolic disorders. However, effective agents for the prevention or treatment of obesity remain limited.

Glucocorticoids as Counterregulatory Hormones of Leptin: Toward an Understanding of Leptin Resistance [PDF]

open access: yesDiabetes, 1997
The product of the ob gene, leptin, is a hormone secreted by adipose tissue that acts in the hypothalamus to regulate the size of the body fat depot. Its central administration has been shown to decrease food intake and body weight, while favoring energy dissipation.

From omics to AI—mapping the pathogenic pathways in type 2 diabetes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Integrating multi‐omics data with AI‐based modelling (unsupervised and supervised machine learning) identify optimal patient clusters, informing AI‐driven accurate risk stratification. Digital twins simulate individual trajectories in real time, guiding precision medicine by matching patients to targeted therapies.

The impact of frailty syndrome on skeletal muscle histology: preventive effects of exercise

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Frailty syndrome exacerbates skeletal muscle degeneration via increased ECM deposition and myofiber loss. This study, using a murine model, demonstrates that endurance exercise attenuates these histopathological alterations, preserving muscle integrity. Findings support exercise as a viable strategy to counteract frailty‐induced musculoskeletal decline

Leptin sensitizing effect of 1,3-butanediol and its potential mechanism

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that regulates appetite and energy expenditure via the hypothalamus. Since the majority of obese subjects are leptin resistant, leptin sensitizers, rather than leptin itself, are expected to be anti-obesity drugs ...

Animal models of NASH: getting both pathology and metabolic context right [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of referral to liver clinics, and its progressive form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), can lead to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease.

Current trends in single‐cell RNA sequencing applications in diabetes mellitus

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing is a powerful approach to decipher the cellular and molecular landscape at a single‐cell resolution. The rapid development of this technology has led to a wide range of applications, including the detection of cellular and molecular mechanisms and the identification and introduction of novel potential diagnostic and ...

Serum leptin changes with metformin treatment in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The relationship between leptin, insulin resistance and other hormonal parameters in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is controversial. We investigated the effect of metformin on leptin levels in women with PCOS.
