Neuraminidase-activated microglia compromise the viability of ependymocytes [PDF]
Neuraminidase (NA) is a sialidase present in the envelope/wall of some virus/bacteria responsible for brain infections, such as flu, mumps or meningitis. The intracerebroventricular injection of NA in the rat brain provokes ependymal detachment and death,

Targeted anion transporter delivery by coiled-coil driven membrane fusion [PDF]
Synthetic anion transporters (anionophores) have potential as biomedical research tools and therapeutics. However, the efficient and specific delivery of these highly lipophilic molecules to a target cell membrane is non-trivial. Here, we investigate the

Lipopeptides: Biosynthesis and Applications [PDF]
Microbial surfactants are amphiphilic molecules. They possess a strong tendency to reduce the interfacial tension among compounds. Biosurfactants possess diverse chemical structures and are nontoxic and hence are biodegradable. They have many applications in bioremediation, enhanced oil recovery, pharmaceutical and in food industry.

The interplay between daptomycin and the immune system
Antibiotics may have bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects but may also cause immunomodulation. Lipopeptides are known immunomodulators that interact with pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in antigen presenting ...

Non-leaching antimicrobial surfaces through polydopamine bio-inspired coating of quaternary ammonium salts or an ultrashort antimicrobial lipopeptide. [PDF]
Bacterial fouling on surfaces significantly increases the resistance of bacteria toward antibiotics, which leads to medical complications and a corresponding financial burden.

Structure of the lipopeptide antibiotic tsushimycin
The amphomycin derivative tsushimycin has been crystallized and its structure determined at 1.0 A resolution. The asymmetric unit contains 12 molecules and with 1300 independent atoms this structure is one of the largest solved using ab initio direct methods.
