Advances in the reconstruction of the spider tree of life: A roadmap for spider systematics and comparative studies

open access: yesCladistics, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 479-532, December 2023., 2023
Abstract In the last decade and a half, advances in genetic sequencing technologies have revolutionized systematics, transforming the field from studying morphological characters or a few genetic markers, to genomic datasets in the phylogenomic era. A plethora of molecular phylogenetic studies on many taxonomic groups have come about, converging on, or

Venom of the Brazilian spider Sicarius ornatus (Araneae, Sicariidae) contains active sphingomyelinase D: potential for toxicity after envenomation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2013
BACKGROUND:The spider family Sicariidae includes two genera, Sicarius and Loxosceles. Bites by Sicarius are uncommon in humans and, in Brazil, a single report is known of a 17-year old man bitten by a Sicarius species that developed a necrotic lesion ...

Global expansion of a solitary‐social tropical spitting spider shaped by multiple long‐distance dispersals

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2023, Issue 3, March 2023., 2023
The spitting spider Scytodes fusca is a species complex well known for its unusual hunting technique which involves spitting a venomous sticky silken substance over its prey. Previous studies supposed that S. fusca was native to Central and South America but had expanded to the tropics of almost every continent.

The biology and evolution of spider venoms

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 97, Issue 1, Page 163-178, February 2022., 2022
ABSTRACT Spiders are diverse, predatory arthropods that have inhabited Earth for around 400 million years. They are well known for their complex venom systems that are used to overpower their prey. Spider venoms contain many proteins and peptides with highly specific and potent activities suitable for biomedical or agrochemical applications, but the ...

The chromosome‐scale assembly of the Canary Islands endemic spider Dysdera silvatica (Arachnida, Araneae) sheds light on the origin and genome structure of chemoreceptor gene families in chelicerates

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 22, Issue 1, Page 375-390, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Here, we present the chromosome‐level genome assembly of Dysdera silvatica Schmidt, 1981, a nocturnal ground‐dwelling spider endemic from the Canary Islands. The genus Dysdera has undergone a remarkable diversification in this archipelago mostly associated with shifts in the level of trophic specialization, becoming an excellent model to study

New Record of Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) from Bashagard District, Southern Iran, with the Report of a Medically Important Species

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Spiders are the largest order of arachnids with some medically important species. Considering that no comprehensive research has been conducted on the fauna and distribution of Araneae in Bashagard County (Hormozgan Province) so far, the present investigation has been carried out on these essential issues in this deprived tropical region.

Switching the substrate specificity of lysoplasmalogen‐specific phospholipase D

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 1132-1143, April 2021., 2021
Lysoplasmalogen‐specific phospholipase D (LyPls‐PLD) intrinsically has a high affinity for choline lysoplasmalogen (LyPlsCho). By rational site‐directed mutagenesis (F211L), we converted LysPls‐PLD to a version (LysoPAF‐PLD) that has a high affinity for LysoPAF rather than the natural substrate LyPlsCho.

Sphingomyelinase D Activity in Sicarius tropicus Venom: Toxic Potential and Clues to the Evolution of SMases D in the Sicariidae Family

open access: yesToxins, 2021
The spider family Sicariidae includes three genera, Hexophthalma, Sicarius and Loxosceles. The three genera share a common characteristic in their venoms: the presence of Sphingomyelinases D (SMase D).
