Addressing the safety of new food sources and production systems

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 23, Issue 3, May 2024.
Abstract New food sources and production systems (NFPS) are garnering much attention, driven by international trade, changing consumer preferences, potential sustainability benefits, and innovations in climate‐resilient food production systems. However, NFPS can introduce new challenges for food safety agencies and food manufacturers.

The role of the inflammasome in cellular responses to toxins and bacterial effectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Invading pathogens are recognized by mammalian cells through dedicated receptors found either at the cell surface or in the cytoplasm. These receptors, like the trans-membrane Toll-like Receptors (TLR) or the cytosolic Nod-like Receptors (NLR), initiate ...

Insulin trafficking in a glucose responsive engineered human liver cell line is regulated by the interaction of ATP-sensitive potassium channels and voltage- gated calcium channels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Type I diabetes is caused by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta (â) cells [1]. Current treatment requires multiple daily injections of insulin to control blood glucose levels.

The isolation and purification of a caribbean maitotoxin

open access: yes, 1994
The phenomenon known as red tide has been a topic of great interest in that there is concern that the scale and complexity of this natural phenomenon are expanding. It is known that the benthic dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus, produces a variety of polyether toxins that contaminate seafood and result in human illness.

Biophysical and pharmacological characterisation of recombinant and native rat P2X7 receptors

open access: yes, 2009
P2X7 receptors exhibit a mainly non-neuronal localisation on immune and glial cells and primarily function as non-selective cation channels. After prolonged or repeated exposure to agonist, functional and cellular changes occur: the formation of a ...

Toxic dinoflagellates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012

Probenecid Blocks Human P2X7 Receptor-Induced Dye Uptake via a Pannexin-1 Independent Mechanism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
P2X7 is a ligand-gated ion channel which is activated by ATP and displays secondary permeability characteristics. The mechanism of development of the secondary permeability pathway is currently unclear, although a role for the hemichannel protein ...

Untersuchung zur Beteiligung von Proteinkinase A und Tyrosinkinasen an der Calcium-abhängigen Signaltransduktion von Glucagon-like Peptide 1(7-36)amid in Insulin-sezernierenden Zellen des endokrinen Pankreas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005

Maitotoxin, a Ca2+ channel activator candidate.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1982
Effects of maitotoxin, the most potent marine toxin, were studied using a rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC12h. A low concentration (10(-8) g/ml) of maitotoxin induced a profound increase in CA2+ influx into PC12h cells and the Ca2+-dependent release of [3H]norepinephrine from them.
