Computational Evolutionary Embryogeny [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Evolutionary and developmental processes are used to evolve the configurations of 3-D structures in silico to achieve desired performances. Natural systems utilize the combination of both evolution and development processes to produce remarkable ...

Understanding how morphogens work [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2008
In this article, we describe the mechanisms by which morphogens in theXenopusembryo exert their long-range effects. Our results are consistent with the idea that signalling molecules such as activin and the nodal-related proteins traverse responding tissue not by transcytosis or by cytonemes but by movement through the extracellular space.

Pentagone internalises glypicans to fine-tune multiple signalling pathways

open access: yeseLife, 2016
Tight regulation of signalling activity is crucial for proper tissue patterning and growth. Here we investigate the function of Pentagone (Pent), a secreted protein that acts in a regulatory feedback during establishment and maintenance of BMP/Dpp ...

Drosophila hedgehog signaling range and robustness depend on direct and sustained heparan sulfate interactions

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2023
Morphogens determine cellular differentiation in many developing tissues in a concentration dependent manner. As a central model for gradient formation during animal development, Hedgehog (Hh) morphogens spread away from their source to direct growth and

Numerical Methods for Two-Dimensional Stem Cell Tissue Growth. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Growth of developing and regenerative biological tissues of different cell types is usually driven by stem cells and their local environment. Here, we present a computational framework for continuum tissue growth models consisting of stem cells, cell ...

A unified design space of synthetic stripe-forming networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Synthetic biology is a promising tool to study the function and properties of gene regulatory networks. Gene circuits with predefined behaviours have been successfully built and modelled, but largely on a case-by-case basis.

Cleavage activates Dispatched for Sonic Hedgehog ligand release

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Hedgehog ligands activate an evolutionarily conserved signaling pathway that provides instructional cues during tissue morphogenesis, and when corrupted, contributes to developmental disorders and cancer.

Noise control and utility: From regulatory network to spatial patterning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Stochasticity (or noise) at cellular and molecular levels has been observed extensively as a universal feature for living systems. However, how living systems deal with noise while performing desirable biological functions remains a major mystery ...

BMPs direct sensory interneuron identity in the developing spinal cord using signal-specific not morphogenic activities

open access: yeseLife, 2017
The Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) family reiteratively signals to direct disparate cellular fates throughout embryogenesis. In the developing dorsal spinal cord, multiple BMPs are required to specify sensory interneurons (INs).

The biological frontier of pattern formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Morphogenetic patterns are highly sophisticated dissipative structures. Are they governed by the same general mechanisms as chemical and hydrodynamic patterns? Turing's symmetry breaking and Wolpert's signalling provide alternative mechanisms.
