Colonic barrier function in ulcerative colitis - Interactions between ion and mucus secretion

open access: yes, 2012
Anion and mucus secretions have traditionally been looked upon as two separate parts of the epithelial defense system. The importance of anion secretion has been attributed to its role in creating the driving force for fluid secretion that flushes the ...

De Novo Assembly of Mud Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) Skin Transcriptome to Identify Putative Genes Involved in Immunity and Epidermal Mucus Secretion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Fish skin serves as the first line of defense against a wide variety of chemical, physical and biological stressors. Secretion of mucus is among the most prominent characteristics of fish skin and numerous innate immune factors have been identified in ...

Entamoeba histolytica Cysteine Proteinase 5 Evokes Mucin Exocytosis from Colonic Goblet Cells via αvβ3 Integrin. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2016
Critical to the pathogenesis of intestinal amebiasis, Entamoeba histolytica (Eh) induces mucus hypersecretion and degrades the colonic mucus layer at the site of invasion.

IL-1ra Secreted by ATP-Induced P2Y2 Negatively Regulates MUC5AC Overproduction via PLCβ3 during Airway Inflammation

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2016
Mucus secretion is often uncontrolled in many airway inflammatory diseases of humans. Identifying the regulatory pathway(s) of mucus gene expression, mucus overproduction, and hypersecretion is important to alleviate airway inflammation in these diseases.

Excess Secretion of Gel-Forming Mucins and Associated Innate Defense Proteins with Defective Mucin Un-Packaging Underpin Gallbladder Mucocele Formation in Dogs. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Mucosal protection of the gallbladder is vital yet we know very little about the mechanisms involved. In domestic dogs, an emergent syndrome referred to as gallbladder mucocele formation is characterized by excessive secretion of abnormal mucus that ...

Gastric Output of Pancreatic Secretory Trypsin-Inhibitor Is Increased by Misoprostol

open access: yes, 1991
Pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) is a potent protease inhibitor that also has growth promoting activity. It has recently been identified in the foveolar cells of the stomach, which secrete mucus.

Analysis of airway secretions in a model of sulfur dioxide induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

open access: yes, 2006
Hypersecretion and chronic phlegm are major symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but animal models of COPD with a defined functional hypersecretion have not been established so far.

Azithromycin Inhibits Mucus Hypersecretion from Airway Epithelial Cells

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2012
To examine the in vivo effects of the 15-member macrolide, azithromycin (AZM), on mucus hypersecretion, we induced hypertrophic and metaplastic changes of goblet cells in rat nasal epithelium by intranasal instillation of ovalbumin (OVA) in OVA ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Safety of Prescription Nonsteroidal Anti‐inflammatory Drugs in Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Data From a Large Administrative Claims Cohort

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The concern that nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may precipitate flares of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has limited their use in managing musculoskeletal symptoms in those with IBD, but safety data are mixed. Methods This retrospective cohort study included patients with IBD aged at least 18 years from Optum's deidentified ...
