open access: yes, 2023
Fungi are essential components of ecosystems worldwide, playing crucial roles in decomposition, +nutrient cycling, and other ecosystem processes. The evolution of fungi has been shaped by their interactions with other organisms, including predators and prey.

The basal ganglia and the epilepsies

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract The basal ganglia are an evolutionarily conserved neural circuit best known for the selection and sequencing of voluntary movement. Increasing evidence, however, indicates that these structures also play an important role in regulating pathological brain states, including seizures.

Probes for the heterogeneity of muscimol binding sites in rat brain

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
Introduction: The plant-based alkaloid muscimol is a potent agonist of inhibitory GABAA-neurotransmitter receptors. GABAA receptors are a heterogeneous family of pentameric complexes, with 5 out of 19 subunits assembling around the central anion pore ...

Living in the Mycelial World

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract This manuscript documents a systematic ethnomycological analysis of ethnographic archives. Focusing on texts describing human–fungi interactions, I conduct a global, cross‐cultural review of mushroom use, covering 193 societies worldwide. The study reveals diverse mushroom‐related cultural practices, emphasizing the significance of fungi ...

Both Genetic Manipulation and Acupuncture Alleviate Depressive‐Like Behavior Mediated by Astrocytic P2X7 Receptors

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2026.
The efficacy of the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model in mice was assessed using the tail suspension test (TST; A) and the forced swim test (FST; B). In both major depressive disorder (MDD) mouse models, CUMS significantly increased immobility time, indicating the development of depressive‐like behavior.

When CO2 sensing fails: Protective effects of sex hormones and potential mechanisms

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 38, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Breathing movements driven by the brainstem rhythmogenic neural networks rely on chemosensory inputs to produce a motor output that is homeostatically adjusted to the prevailing metabolic demand. The central CO2 chemoreflex is a critical component of respiratory neural circuitry, as defects in these sensors cause hypoventilation syndromes ...

Assessment of Effects of α2-Adrenoceptor Agonists and Antagonists in Dorsal Hippocampus on Muscimol State-dependent Memory

open access: yesMajallah-i Dānishgāh-i ̒Ulūm-i Pizishkī-i Qum, 2014
Background and Objectives: Adrenergic and GABAergic systems of the brain play an important role in memory and learning. According to results of studies, morphine, histamine, and lithium induce state-dependent learning.

Growth of the prefrontal cortical glioblastoma altered cognitive and emotional behaviors via mediating miRNAs and GABA-A receptor signaling pathways in rats

open access: yesBrain Research Bulletin
The present study investigated the impact of GABAergic signaling and miRNA expression on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) growth within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and its associated cognitive and emotional impairments.

A Selective Cortico‐Limbic Network Organizes Behavior During Reward Seeking Under Threat

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience Research, Volume 104, Issue 8, August 2026.
In the SDAmC task, rats step down from safety and cross a threat‐associated context for saccharin. PL limits approach, pIC supports risk assessment, BLA supports avoidance across motivational states, and NAc supports goal‐directed behavior under conflict; IL, lOFC, aIC, and LHb showed no detectable effects.
