Immune Response Modulation by Tumor-Secreted Glycosphingolipids [PDF]
Although originally considered merely structural components of cellular membranes, glycosphingolipids (GSL) arenow recognized as having critical effects on cellular physiology, including proliferation, differentiation, viraltransformation and ontogenesis.

Chemo-enzymatic synthesis of the carbohydrate antigen N-glycolylneuraminic acid from glucose. [PDF]
N-Glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) is a non-human sialic acid, which may play a significant role in human pathologies, such as cancer and vascular disease. Further studies into the role of Neu5Gc in human disease are hindered by limited sources of this carbohydrate. Using a chemo-enzymatic approach, Neu5Gc was accessed in six steps from glucose.

An Overview of the Importance and Value of Porcine Species in Sialic Acid Research
Humans frequently interact with pigs, whose meat is also one of the primary sources of animal protein. They are one of the main species at the center of sialic acid (Sia) research.

Distribution of O-Acetylated Sialic Acids among Target Host Tissues for Influenza Virus. [PDF]
Sialic acids (Sias) are important glycans displayed on the cells and tissues of many different animals and are frequent targets for binding and modification by pathogens, including influenza viruses.

A method is described for analysis of gangliosides by GLC assay of the sialic acid component. Mild acid treatment in methanol converted the latter to methyl ketoside methyl ester, which was then chromatographed as the TMS derivative.

Erythrocytes from GGTA1/CMAH knockout pigs: implications for xenotransfusion and testing in non-human primates [PDF]
Background Pig erythrocytes are potentially useful to solve the worldwide shortage of human blood for transfusion. Domestic pig erythrocytes, however, express antigens that are bound by human preformed antibodies.

Background N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) is synthesized from its precursor N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) by cytidine-5′-monophospho-N acetylneuraminic acid hydroxylase (CMAH), which is encoded by the CMAH gene.

Membrane-enclosed multienzyme (MEME) synthesis of 2,7-anhydro-sialic acid derivatives [PDF]
Naturally occurring 2,7-anhydro-alpha-N-acetylneuraminic acid (2,7-anhydro-Neu5Ac) is a transglycosylation product of bacterial intramolecular trans-sialidases (IT-sialidases).

Role of sialic acid in brachyspira hyodysenteriae adhesion to pig colonic mucins [PDF]
Infection with Brachyspira hyodysenteriae results in mucoid hemorrhagic diarrhea. This pathogen is associated with the colonic mucus layer, mainly composed of mucins. Infection regulates mucin O-glycosylation in the colon and increases mucin secretion as
