The Laminar Organization of Visual Cortex: A Unified View of Development, Learning, and Grouping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Why are all sensory and cognitive neocortex organized into layered circuits? How do these layers organize circuits that form functional columns in cortical maps?

Diverse Modes of Axon Elaboration in the Developing Neocortex

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2005
The development of axonal arbors is a critical step in the establishment of precise neural circuits, but relatively little is known about the mechanisms of axonal elaboration in the neocortex. We used in vivo two-photon time-lapse microscopy to image axons in the neocortex of green fluorescent protein-transgenic mice over the first 3 wk of postnatal ...

Reduced CB1 Cannabinoid Receptor Expression in Alzheimer's Disease and Transgenic Mouse Models

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
CB1 receptor (CB1R) expression was significantly reduced in the hippocampus, medial frontal gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus of Alzheimer's patients. CB1R levels negatively correlated with amyloid‐β and tau pathology. In addition, CB1R expression was also reduced in the cortex of 5xFAD mice and in the hippocampus of Tg4‐42 mice.

Regulation of thalamocortical axon branching by BDNF and synaptic vesicle cycling

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2013
During development, axons form branches in response to extracellular molecules. Little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we investigate how neurotrophin-induced axon branching is related to synaptic vesicle cycling for ...

Distinct, dosage-sensitive requirements for the autism-associated factor CHD8 during cortical development

open access: yesMolecular Autism, 2021
Background CHD8 haploinsufficiency causes autism and macrocephaly with high penetrance in the human population. Chd8 heterozygous mice exhibit relatively subtle brain overgrowth and little gene expression changes in the embryonic neocortex.

Functional Segregation of Epileptogenicity within the Human Amygdala

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective In temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), the amygdala in the epileptogenic network is underestimated compared to other regions such as the hippocampus. Recent advances in anatomical neuroimaging and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) signal analyses could help better understand the involvement of the different amygdala nuclei in the genesis of ...

Subplate cells: amplifiers of neuronal activity in the developing cerebral cortex

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroanatomy, 2009
Due to their unique structural and functional properties, subplate cells are ideally suited to function as important amplifying units within the developing neocortical circuit.

Association between Plasma P‐tau217 and Alzheimer's Copathology and Cognitive Decline in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Clinically relevant Alzheimer's disease co‐pathology is common in Lewy body disorders. Plasma P‐tau217 is a sensitive biomarker for amyloid and tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease. The objective was to determine if plasma P‐tau217 associates with Alzheimer's disease co‐pathology and cognition in Lewy body disorders. Methods Participants had (

AI‐Driven Mapping of Seizure Spread Patterns

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective The focus of epilepsy research has largely been on seizure onset; however, physicians typically examine the patterns of seizure spread past seizure onset as well. This study aims to align automated seizure analysis with clinical practice, leverage deep learning to standardize seizure annotations that varies among physicians, and understand ...
