Interactions between Lateral Hypothalamic Orexin and Dorsal Raphe Circuitry in Energy Balance

open access: yesBrain Sciences
Orexin/hypocretin terminals innervate the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), which projects to motor control areas important for spontaneous physical activity (SPA) and energy expenditure (EE).

Roles of orexin in modulating arousal, feeding and motivation

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2013
Orexin deficiency results in narcolepsy in humans, dogs, and rodents, suggesting that the orexin system is particularly important for maintenance of wakefulness.

A rare genetic variant in the cleavage site of prepro-orexin is associated with idiopathic hypersomnia

open access: yesnpj Genomic Medicine, 2022
Idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) is a rare, heterogeneous sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. In contrast to narcolepsy type 1, which is a well-defined type of central disorders of hypersomnolence, the etiology of IH is poorly ...

The DNA/RNA autophagy protein SIDT2 as a novel neuropathological hallmark in Huntington disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
SIDT2‐immunoreactive inclusions are observed in the striatum, cerebral cortex, and hypothalamus in HD cases with different Vonsattel grades, and the frequency of SIDT2‐immunoreactive inclusions is associated with longer CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene.

Psychedelics, entactogens and psychoplastogens for depression and related disorders

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Currently, the most actively investigated rapidly acting antidepressants, anxiolytics and/or anti PTSD agents, include psychedelics e.g. psilocybin, LSD, N,N‐dimethyltryptamine, ayahuasca; non‐hallucinogenic entactogens, e.g. MDMA; psychoplastogens which rapidly promote neuroplasticity, e.g.

Changes in the orexin system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and circadian rhythm in juvenile-stressed rats

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences
The orexin system has been demonstrated to play various physiological roles, such as in feeding, sleep, and autonomic neural function. Clinically, orexin receptor antagonists are used as hypnotics, and several clinical trials have suggested their ...

Orexin neurons receive glycinergic innervations. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Glycine, a nonessential amino-acid that acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is currently used as a dietary supplement to improve the quality of sleep, but its mechanism of action is poorly understood.

Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant phytocannabinoids isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is a lipophilic, non‐intoxicating substance that differently from Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) does not present the typical profile of a drug of abuse.
