The evolution of per-cell organelle number

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2016
Organelles with their own distinct genomes, such as plastids and mitochondria, are found in most eukaryotic cells. As these organelles and their host cells have evolved, the partitioning of metabolic processes and the encoding of interacting gene ...

Tuning SAS-6 architecture with monobodies impairs distinct steps of centriole assembly

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Centriole biogenesis begins with self-assembly of SAS-6 proteins into 9-fold symmetrical ring polymers, which then stack into a cartwheel that scaffolds organelle formation. Here, the authors develop monobodies against Chlamydomonas reinhardtii SAS-6 and

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Mitochondrial stress in advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis associated with chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Adaptive mitochondrial mechanisms allow mitochondrial resilience and prevent the worsening of fibrosis, while deregulation of these mechanisms promotes the progression from no/minimal‐mild (F0‐F2) fibrosis to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis (F3‐F4). Abstract Background and Aims Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes oxidative stress (OS) and alters ...

Melanosomes: Biogenesis, Properties, and Evolution of an Ancient Organelle [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiological Reviews, 2019
Melanosomes are organelles that produce and store melanin, a widespread biological pigment with a unique suite of properties including high refractive index, semiconducting capabilities, material stiffness, and high fossilization potential. They are involved in numerous critical biological functions in organisms across the tree of life.

Lipid droplets and small extracellular vesicles: More than two independent entities

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology
Despite increasing knowledge about small extracellular vesicle (sEV) composition and functions in cell–cell communication, the mechanism behind their biogenesis remains unclear.

The Effect of Moderate and High Intensity Resistance Training on the Expression of PGC-1α, TFAM and AMPK of Cardiomyocytes in Elderly Rats

open access: yesJournal of Ardabil University of Medical Sciences, 2021
Background & objectives: Age-related cardiovascular dysfunction is often accompanied by impaired mitochondrial biogenesis and function. Exercise training can improve mitochondrial function and content in muscle to meet the energy demands of the cells ...

Nitric oxide, interorganelle communication, and energy flow: a novel route to slow aging

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2015
The mitochondrial lifecycle (mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamics, and removal by mitophagy) is carefully orchestrated to ensure the efficient generation of cellular energy and to maintain reactive oxygen species production within an optimal range for ...

Structural analysis of resting mouse platelets by 3D-EM reveals an unexpected variation in α-granule shape

open access: yesPlatelets, 2021
Mice and mouse platelets are major experimental models for hemostasis and thrombosis; however, important physiological data from this model has received little to no quantitative, 3D ultrastructural analysis.

Apicoplast Dynamics During Plasmodium Cell Cycle

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
The deadly malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, contains a unique subcellular organelle termed the apicoplast, which is a clinically-proven antimalarial drug target.
