Ouabain-Induced Cell Death and Survival. Role of α1-Na,K-ATPase-Mediated Signaling and [Na+]i/[K+]i-Dependent Gene Expression

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Ouabain is of cardiotonic steroids (CTS) family that is plant-derived compounds and is known for many years as therapeutic and cytotoxic agents. They are specific inhibitors of Na,K-ATPase, the enzyme, which pumps Na+ and K+ across plasma membrane of ...

Analysis of the Matrix Metalloproteinases Family Profile in Gastric Cancer Suggests Key Matrix Metalloproteinases for Tumor Development and Their Clinical Impact

open access: yesMolecular Carcinogenesis, Volume 65, Issue 5, Page 577-588, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type worldwide, representing a public health problem. Among the genes related to this tumorigenesis, the family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), essential regulators of the extracellular matrix (ECM), stand out for their involvement in the development and progression of GC.

Tetraopes Milkweed Beetle Genomes Elucidate the Adaptive Basis of a Temperate Coevolutionary Radiation

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The coevolutionary radiation of 27 species of Tetraopes longhorned beetles and their Asclepias milkweed hosts represents a classic example of adaptive evolution driven by plant chemical defences and herbivore counteradaptations. Investigations to date, however, have focused on a single species, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus, which feeds on the ...

Investigation of Ouabain-Induced Anticancer Effect in Human Androgen- Independent Prostate Cancer Pc-3 Cells

open access: yes, 2009
To determine the therapeutic potential of cardiac glycosides in androgen- independent prostate cancer, we examined ouabain-induced cytotoxic effect as well as the signaling pathways in PC-3 cells.

Zebrafish as a model for Catel–Manzke syndrome—identification and characterization of the zebrafish TGDS ortholog

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 8, Page 2248-2269, April 2026.
Zebrafish Tgds, when expressed as a recombinant protein, catalyzes the dehydration of UDP‐D‐glucose, the initial step in the formation of 6‐deoxyhexoses. Corresponding Tgds mutations found in Catel–Manzke syndrome patients lead to reduced enzymatic activity and stability.

Molecular mechanism of cofilin dephosphorylation by ouabain

open access: yes, 2017
We previously reported that phosphorylated cofilin-triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) complex interacts with Na,K-ATPase and enhances the pump activity through the phosphorylation of cofilin via Rho-mediated signaling pathway.

Ouabain is secreted by the adrenal gland in awake dogs

open access: yes, 1993
Ouabain has been identified in the plasma and adrenal glands of several mammals, including humans. To investigate possible adrenal secretion of ouabain in vivo, at rest, and in response to acute blood volume changes, we prepared trained adult dogs (n ...

Multifacet Roles of Cellular Senescence in Cancer: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications

open access: yesMedComm – Oncology, Volume 5, Issue 1, March 2026.
Cellular senescence shapes tumor progression through both antitumor and protumor mechanisms. Senescence triggered by telomere shortening restricts malignant transformation and limits tumor cell proliferation, while the senescence‐associated secretory phenotype (SASP) secretion enhances antitumor immunity by activating cytotoxic T cells.

Ouabain and vascular reactivity Brazilian

open access: yes, 2020
Ouabain is an endogenous substance occurring in the plasma in the nanomolar range, that has been proposed to increase vascular resistance and induce hypertension.
