Oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation are upstream of amyloid pathology [PDF]

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2015
Oxidative stress is a common feature of the aging process and of many neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Understanding the direct causative relationship between oxidative stress and amyloid pathology, and determining the underlying molecular mechanisms is crucial for the development of more effective therapeutics for the ...

Antioxidant Effects of Grape Vine Cane Extracts from Different Chinese Grape Varieties on Edible Oils

open access: yesMolecules, 2014
This study involved the determination of the peroxide value (POV) as a measure of the resistance of the oxidation of edible oil with grape vine cane additives to assess their antioxidation potential.

Anisidine value as a measurement of the latent damage of fats

open access: yesGrasas y Aceites, 1991
Although the peroxide value is a common measurement of lipid oxidation, its use is limited to the initial stages of oxidation. Since peroxides are vulnerable to further decomposition, the complete oxidative history of the oil may not be revealed.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Oxidative damage of U937 human leukemic cells caused by hydroxyl radical results in singlet oxygen formation.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The exposure of human cells to oxidative stress leads to the oxidation of biomolecules such as lipids, proteins and nuclei acids. In this study, the oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA was studied after the addition of hydrogen peroxide and Fenton ...

FINO2 Initiates Ferroptosis Through GPX4 Inactivation and Iron Oxidation

open access: yesNature Chemical Biology, 2018
Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic form of regulated cell death caused by the failure of the glutathione-dependent lipid-peroxide-scavenging network. FINO2 is an endoperoxide-containing 1,2-dioxolane that can initiate ferroptosis selectively in engineered ...

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.

Induction of Peroxisomal β‐Oxidation as a Critical Mechanism for Ethanol‐Induced Hepatic Triglyceride Accumulation

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances
Excessive oxidation of ethanol has been well known to induce hepatic triglyceride accumulation, while the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not fully demonstrated.

Lipid Oxidation in Dispersive Systems with Monoacylglycerols

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 2009
Model fat blends with a monoacylglycerol emulsifier with different acyl chain (C10, C12, C14, C16, C18, C18:1, C20, C22) were prepared and stored under oxygen atmosphere 8 weeks at temperature 20°C.
