The Dual Face of Fusobacterium nucleatum in Cancer: Foe, Friend or Both?

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Fusobacterium nucleatum has established interactions with cancers in humans. However, contrary to a traditional view that these interactions are uniformly pro‐tumoural, recent evidence suggests a more nuanced role, where contact‐dependent and contact‐independent mechanisms may support either tumour progression or restriction depending on tumour site ...

Periodontal Salutogenesis: Why Are Some People Resistant to Oral Microbial Dysbiosis and Destructive Inflammation?

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Emerging evidence suggests that periodontal health is not simply the absence of disease, but the result of a dynamic interaction between biological resilience, healthy lifestyles, adaptive coping mechanisms, and supportive environments. This results in a strong sense of coherence, which is not only a psychological state but also a biological state ...

The Hna Phage Defence Protein: A DNA‐Stimulated Helicase With Cryptic Nuclease Activity

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
The Hna (Helicase‐nuclease Abi) phage defence system consists of a single protein and provides defence through abortive infection. We show that Hna's abortive infection response can be recreated in a heterologous host upon expression of phage single‐stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) and present a characterization of Hna's biochemical activity.

Type IV‐Dominated Plasmid‐Encoded CRISPR‐Cas Systems Are Enriched in Multireplicon and Multi‐Stressor Resistance Plasmids Across the Global Plasmidome

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Screening 72,555 plasmid sequences reveals that intact CRISPR‐Cas systems are rare (1.03%) but strongly enriched in multireplicon and multi‐stressor resistance plasmids, with Type IV‐A as the dominant subtype. These findings implicate plasmid‐encoded CRISPR‐Cas as non‐randomly retained elements of structurally complex and high‐risk backbones.

Mapping of Fire Blight Resistance QTL in the European Pear (Pyrus communis L.) Cultivar ‘Petersbirne’

open access: yesPlant Breeding, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The breeding of pear (Pyrus communis) cultivars that meet market requirements and are at the same time resistant to fire blight is a challenging task beacuse appropriate resistance donors are scarce. To identify valuable resistance sources, phenotypic screening and genetic characterization are indispensable.
