UV-A light treatment for controlling enzymatic browning of fresh-cut fruits [PDF]
Enzymatic browning is critical in the preservation of the quality and the shelf-life of fresh-cut fruits. Non-thermal technologies such as UV radiation are emerging for controlling polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, the main agent responsible for ...

Enzymatic activity of air-dried and water-stable aggregates of soils under different land use
Under study were the levels of enzymatic (peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase and catalase) activity in air-dry structural particles 1-2 mm thick and water- stable aggregates extracted from the samples of soddy-podzolic soils (under forest and in crop) and ...

The use of vapour of essential oils (EOs) through an innovative pilot-plant packaging device was studied to preserve the quality of sliced mushrooms during storage. A mix of EOs (eugenol, bergamot EO, and grapefruit EO) was vaporized (100 and 125 µL L−1)

Above- and belowground herbivory jointly impact defense and seed dispersal traits in Taraxacum officinale [PDF]
Plants are able to cope with herbivores by inducing defensive traits or growth responses that allow them to reduce or avoid the impact of herbivores. Since above- and belowground herbivores differ substantially in life-history traits, for example feeding

Physical Treatments and Propolis Extract to Enhance Quality Attributes of Fresh-Cut Mixed Vegetables [PDF]
The impact of individual and combined application of propolis extract (PE) plus ultrasound (ULT) or thermal treatment (TT) on the microbiological, nutritional, physicochemical and sensory quality of fresh-cut mixed vegetables for soup (celery, leek and ...

Effects of Flight on Gene Expression and Aging in the Honey Bee Brain and Flight Muscle [PDF]
Honey bees move through a series of in-hive tasks (e.g., “nursing”) to outside tasks (e.g., “foraging”) that are coincident with physiological changes and higher levels of metabolic activity.

SPAD-502 and atLEAF CHL PLUS values provide good estimation of the chlorophyll content for Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg. Leaves [PDF]
Measurement of chlorophyll content using destructive methods is not efficient due to a large number of samples, cost, and time needed. Estimationof chlorophyll content by nondestructive methods using handheld chlorophyll meter may be considered to ...

Banana Polyphenoloxidase. Preparation and Properties [PDF]
Griffiths (13) has presented evidence indicating that the browning reactions of banana fruit result from the enzymic oxidation of dopamine (3,4 dihydroxyphenylethyliamine) by polyphenoloxidase. Although dopamine does occur in various fruits and vegetables (23), it has not previously been implicated as an important substrate in browning reactions.
