Primary Cilium Identifies a Quiescent Cell Population in the Human Intestinal Crypt

open access: yesCells, 2023
Primary cilia are sensory antennae located at the cell surface which mediate a variety of extracellular signals involved in development, tissue homeostasis, stem cells and cancer.

Stimulation of electro-olfactogram responses in the main olfactory epithelia by airflow depends on the type 3 adenylyl cyclase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Cilia of olfactory sensory neurons are the primary sensory organelles for olfaction. The detection of odorants by the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) depends on coupling of odorant receptors to the type 3 adenylyl cyclase (AC3) in olfactory cilia.

Primary Cilia and Mammalian Hedgehog Signaling [PDF]

open access: yesCold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology, 2016
It has been a decade since it was discovered that primary cilia have an essential role in Hedgehog (Hh) signaling in mammals. This discovery came from screens in the mouse that identified a set of genes that are required for both normal Hh signaling and for the formation of primary cilia.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Primary Cilia Are Critical Regulators of White Adipose Tissue Expansion

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
The primary cilium is a microtubule-based cellular protrusion found on most mammalian cell types in diverse tissues. It functions as a cellular antenna to sense and transduce a broad range of signals, including odorants, light, mechanical stimuli, and ...

Isolation of Primary Cilia by Shear Force [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The cell’s primary cilium is both a mechanical and chemical sensor involved in many signaling pathways. In order to ascertain protein enrichment in the primary cilium or study sub-ciliary localization of various proteins, it is advantageous to remove the

Primary cilia and forebrain development

open access: yesMechanisms of Development, 2013
With a microtubule-based axoneme supporting its plasma membrane-ensheathed projection from the basal body of almost all cell types in the human body, and present in only one copy per cell, the primary cilium can be considered an organelle sui generis.

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Characterization of astrocytic primary cilia in the adult mouse cortex and hippocampus

open access: yesHeliyon
The primary cilium is a single, antenna-like projection found on the surface of eukaryotic cells. Primary cilia contain cell signaling components that are critical for developmental patterning and cell cycle maintenance.

The Roles of Primary Cilia in Cardiovascular Diseases

open access: yesCells, 2018
Primary cilia are microtubule-based organelles found in most mammalian cell types. Cilia act as sensory organelles that transmit extracellular clues into intracellular signals for molecular and cellular responses.
