Therapeutic approaches with intravitreal injections in geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration: current drugs and potential molecules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The present review focuses on recent clinical trials that analyze the efficacy of intravitreal therapeutic agents for the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), such as neuroprotective drugs, and complement inhibitors, also called ...

QUANTITATIVE STUDIES ON THE PROPERDIN-COMPLEMENT SYSTEM [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Experimental Medicine, 1956
Quantitative methods have been developed for the estimation of C'3 and properdin. With these methods, the kinetics of the over-all reaction between properdin, zymosan, and C'3 were investigated. The reaction followed first order kinetics, provided zymosan was in excess, and the serum not diluted beyond 1/4.

CNS/PNS proteoglycans functionalize neuronal and astrocyte niche microenvironments optimizing cellular activity by preserving membrane polarization dynamics, ionic microenvironments, ion fluxes, neuronal activation, and network neurotransductive capacity

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience Research, Volume 102, Issue 7, July 2024.
Proteoglycans are important multifunctional components of the central and peripheral nervous systems and represent a diverse group of specialized proteins that stabilize and functionalize these tissues. Abstract Central and peripheral nervous system (CNS/PNS) proteoglycans (PGs) have diverse functional roles, this study examined how these control ...

Complement inhibition in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria: From biology to therapy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, Volume 46, Issue S1, Page 43-54, May 2024.
Abstract Complement inhibitors are the mainstay of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) treatment. The anti‐C5 monoclonal antibody eculizumab was the first treatment to improve hemolysis, thrombotic risk, and survival in PNH although at the price of a life‐long intravenous fortnightly drug.

Hematological changes in Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) supplemented with β‐glucan and Pediococcus acidilactici synbiotic

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 104, Issue 4, Page 1091-1111, April 2024.
Abstract Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) are a species of growing interest for commercial aquaculture. Effective health monitoring is crucial to the successful growout of the species, and prophylactic and therapeutic use of chemicals and antibiotics has been the traditional strategy for promoting stock health.

Properdin Levels in Splenectomized Persons

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1959
SummaryProperdin titers were definitely lower in 105 splenectomized persons than in 113 normal; healthy subjects. Within the splenectomized group, there was no correlation between properdin level and age of individual, age at splenectomy, and years post-splenectomy.
