Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of propionic acid, sodium propionate, calcium propionate and ammonium propionate for all animal species

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2011
Abstract The maximum safe level of propionic acid for poultry is 10 g/kg complete feed, for pigs 30 g/kg complete feed. The corresponding safe concentrations in water for drinking would be 4 and 10 g/L, respectively. Ruminants show a high tolerance to propionic acid.

Ordered Changes in Methane Production Performance and Metabolic Pathway Transition of Methanogenic Archaea under Gradually Increasing Sodium Propionate Stress Intensity

open access: yesFermentation
This study examined the impact of sodium propionate concentration (0–40 g/L) on the methanogenic archaea in an inoculum which was cultured in basal nutrient medium, exploring its mechanisms and nonlinear stress intensity.

Propionate Protects Haloperidol-Induced Neurite Lesions Mediated by Neuropeptide Y

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2018
Haloperidol is a commonly used antipsychotic drug for treating schizophrenia. Clinical imaging studies have found that haloperidol can cause volume loss of human brain tissue, which is supported by animal studies showing that haloperidol reduces the ...

Propionate-Producing Consortium Restores Antibiotic-Induced Dysbiosis in a Dynamic in vitro Model of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Metabolic syndrome is a growing public health concern. Efforts at searching for links with the gut microbiome have revealed that propionate is a major fermentation product in the gut with several health benefits toward energy homeostasis.
