Microgravity‐induced changes in skeletal muscle and possible countermeasures: What we can learn from bed rest and human space studies

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite exercise countermeasures to sustain health and performance in spaceflight, complete maintenance of muscle mass and functions in microgravity is still not possible for most astronauts. The principal cause of the limited effectiveness of existing exercise countermeasures is the difficulty in achieving full loading forces in space.

Turning over new ideas in human skeletal muscle proteostasis: What do we know and where to from here?

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding the turnover of proteins in tissues gives information as to how external stimuli result in phenotypic change. Nowhere is such phenotypic change more conspicuous than skeletal muscle, which can be effectively remodelled by increased loading, ageing and unloading (disuse), all of which are subject to modification by nutrition and ...

Applying lessons from limb muscle disuse and ageing to better understand ventilator‐induced diaphragm dysfunction

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life‐saving intervention applied to critically ill patients. A common consequence of MV is ventilator‐induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD), which is characterized by significant diaphragm atrophy and reduced contractile function. Older patients who receive MV are more likely to develop VIDD, have worse recovery,

Canonical and non‐canonical functions of proteins regulating mitochondrial dynamics in mammalian physiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that continuously remodel their architecture through coordinated cycles of fusion and fission. This review examines the four key GTPases that orchestrate mitochondrial dynamics in mammals: MFN1, MFN2, OPA1, and DRP1.

Intramuscular pathways of maladaptation in overtraining syndrome

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The transition from adaptive overreaching to maladaptive overtraining and mechanisms through which excessive training load can lead to performance decline. Four interconnected pathophysiological domains are highlighted: neural fatigue, involving both central and peripheral components such as altered sensory feedback and reflex ...
