Synthesis of a π‐Extended Phenazine Diimide Derivative and Characterization of Its Closed‐Shell Reduced States

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
In this work, the synthesis and characterization of novel π‐extended phenazine diimides is reported. The derivatives undergo differential reduction to a dihydrophenazine or Meisenheimer form depending on the reaction conditions employed. The outcome of this work highlights the paramount importance of structural design in determining the nature of the ...

Construction of membrane-bound artificial cells using microfluidics: a new frontier in bottom-up synthetic biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The quest to construct artificial cells from the bottom-up using simple building blocks has received much attention over recent decades and is one of the grand challenges in synthetic biology.

Solvent‐Mediated Dewetting Principles for Cell‐Sized Liposome Formation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Dynamics of solvent‐mediated dewetting for giant unilamellar liposome formation. Solvent removal, through changing lipid packing and membrane tension, is shown to induce partial dewetting into equilibrium low and high budding angle morphologies. Complete dewetting requires mechanical force, quantified using optical tweezers.

Putative roles of terpenoids in primitive membranes

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
For the continuation and evolution of life, primitive membranes formed from prebiotically available components must have fulfilled certain essential requirements. Candidate amphiphiles, such as straight-chain fatty acids, that can self-assemble into cell-

Protocell design through modular compartmentalization [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of The Royal Society Interface, 2013
De novo synthetic biological design has the potential to significantly impact upon applications such as energy generation and nanofabrication. Current designs for constructing organisms from component parts are typically limited in scope, as they utilize a cut-and-paste ideology to create simple stepwise engineered protein-signalling pathways.

Fast and Slow Signal Propagation in Abiotic Polypeptide Assemblies

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 6, 27 March 2026.
Proteinoid microspheres formed by thermal polymerization of amino acids exhibit spontaneous electrical potential fluctuations without genetic material, membranes, or ion channels. Multi‐electrode recordings and electron microscopy reveal composition‐dependent voltage oscillations, long‐term drifts, and correlated signals across electrodes.

Protocells Either Synchronize or Starve. [PDF]

open access: yesEntropy (Basel)
Two different processes take place in self-reproducing protocells, i.e., (i) cell reproduction by fission and (ii) duplication of the genetic material. One major problem is indeed that of assuring that the two processes take place at the same pace, i.e., that they synchronize, which is a necessary condition for sustainable growth.

Biomimetic Construction of Abiotic Membranes Through Acylation of Cationic Diamino Acids

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 6, 27 March 2026.
Cells produce membrane‐forming phospholipids through complex enzymatic pathways. Here, we present the in situ synthesis of a novel class of abiotic phospholipid analogs (APAs) featuring a permanent choline‐mimetic cation on diamino acid backbones.

Growth, Dissolution and Segregation of Genetically Encoded RNA Droplets by Ribozyme Catalysis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 7, 9 February 2026.
Ribozymes enable sequence‐encoded turnover of RNA droplet material, resulting in transiently active droplets that selectively segregate based on their genotype. This establishes a direct link between genetic information and droplet behavior, marking a step toward programmable, evolvable RNA‐based compartments with life‐like properties.

The reproduction process of Gram-positive protocells

open access: yesScientific Reports
Protocells are believed to have existed on early Earth prior to the emergence of prokaryotes. Due to their rudimentary nature, it is widely accepted that these protocells lacked intracellular mechanisms to regulate their reproduction, thereby relying ...
