A Single Dose of LSD Does Not Alter Gene Expression of the Serotonin 2A Receptor Gene (HTR2A) or Early Growth Response Genes (EGR1-3) in Healthy Subjects

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2017
Rationale: Renewed interest has been seen in the use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in psychiatric research and practice. The repeated use of LSD leads to tolerance that is believed to result from serotonin (5-HT) 5-HT2A receptor downregulation.

Withdrawal from chronic alcohol impairs the serotonin-mediated modulation of GABAergic transmission in the infralimbic cortex in male rats

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease
The infralimbic cortex (IL) is part of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), exerting top-down control over structures that are critically involved in the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Japanese Cohort Study and Meta‐Analysis Demonstrate Significant Association Between Serotonin Transporter‐Linked Polymorphic Region and Schizophrenia

open access: yesNeuropsychopharmacology Reports, Volume 46, Issue 2, June 2026.
This study demonstrates a significant association between the 5‐HTTLPR polymorphism and schizophrenia risk. The short allele was significantly overrepresented in patients (OR = 1.39, p = 0.007), suggesting a potential contribution to schizophrenia risk.

Repeated Clozapine Increases the Level of Serotonin 5-HT1AR Heterodimerization with 5-HT2A or Dopamine D2 Receptors in the Mouse Cortex

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
G-protein–coupled receptor (GPCR) heterodimers are new targets for the treatment of schizophrenia. Dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors play an important role in neurotransmission and have been implicated in many human ...

Vortioxetine–Lurasidone Augmentation for Compulsive Scratching Behavior in Prader–Willi Syndrome: A Case Report

open access: yesNeuropsychopharmacology Reports, Volume 46, Issue 2, June 2026.
This graphical abstract illustrates a case of Prader–Willi syndrome with compulsive scratching behavior, in which augmentation with lurasidone following vortioxetine treatment resulted in marked symptom improvement. The case highlights a potential pharmacological approach for obsessive‐compulsive–related behaviors in Prader–Willi syndrome.

Efficacy and safety of 2–4 mg brexpiprazole in the management of schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences Reports, Volume 5, Issue 2, June 2026.
This graphical summary illustrates the efficacy and safety of brexpiprazole (2–4 mg) in patients with schizophrenia. The meta‐analysis demonstrates significant improvement in clinical outcomes, with reductions in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression ‐ Severity scale (CGI‐S) scores, indicating better symptom ...

Pharmacologic MRI Brain Imaging Studies of Serotonin 5‐HT1 Receptor Agonists in Awake Mice

open access: yesPharmacology Research &Perspectives, Volume 14, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Serotonin (5‐hydroxytryptamine, 5‐HT) type‐1 G protein‐coupled receptors are expressed throughout the central nervous system. 5‐HT1AR activation is the putative mechanism of approved drugs for generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder and is being studied in the treatment of autism and neurological disorders.

The structural diversity of psychedelic drug actions revealed

open access: yesNature Communications
There is currently a resurgence in exploring the utility of classical psychedelics to treat depression, addiction, anxiety disorders, cluster headaches, and many other neuropsychiatric disorders. A biological target of these compounds, and a hypothesized

Serotonin regulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in select brain regions during acute psychological stress

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2016
Previous studies suggest that serotonin (5-HT) might interact with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) during the stress response. However, the relationship between 5-HT and BDNF expression under purely psychological stress is unclear. In this study,
