Lactoferrin treatment activates acetylcholinesterase, decreasing acetylcholine levels in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell culture supernatants, inhibiting cell survival

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Representation of the suggested mode of action of lactoferrin (Lf) in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells. Lf induces activation of caspase‐3 by activating p53 and AChE leading to decreased ACh concentrations. In turn, ACh signaling leads to activation of VEGF and AKT and blocking of caspase‐3.

Adipokines and Associations With Incident Osteoporotic Fracture in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We assessed whether circulating adipokines are associated with incident fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods Three adipokines (adiponectin, leptin, and fibroblast growth factor [FGF]‐21) were measured using banked enrollment serum from participants in a longitudinal RA cohort.

Insulin and Leptin Signaling Interact in the Mouse Kiss1 Neuron during the Peripubertal Period. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Reproduction requires adequate energy stores for parents and offspring to survive. Kiss1 neurons, which are essential for fertility, have the potential to serve as the central sensors of metabolic factors that signal to the reproductive axis the presence

A Microphysiological Interface of Skeletal Myobundles and Inflamed Adipose Tissue for Recapitulating Muscle Dysfunction in an Obese Microenvironment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A human cell‐based microphysiological system integrates engineered muscle tissues with an inflamed adipose–macrophage niche to model obese microenvironment‐induced muscle dysfunction. Muscle contraction is quantified by pillar deflection coupled with computational stiffness estimation. Secretome and transcriptomic profiling reveal inflammation‐mediated

Leptin potentiates astrogenesis in the developing hypothalamus

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2015
Background: The proper establishment of hypothalamic feeding circuits during early development has a profound influence on energy homeostasis, and perturbing this process could predispose individuals to obesity and its associated consequences later in ...

Enhanced Hypothalamic Leptin Signaling in Mice Lacking Dopamine D2 Receptors*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2010
The dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) plays a critical role in diverse neurophysiological functions. D2R knock-out mice (D2R−/−) show reduced food intake and body weight while displaying an increased basal energy expenditure level, compared with their wild type

The role of leptin in selected skin diseases

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2020
Leptin is an adipokine, adipocyte-derived compound, which acts both as a hormone and cytokine. It is mainly synthesized by adipocytes of white adipose tissue. Leptin possesses pleiotropic functions including, among others, stimulation of angiogenesis and
