Commissioning a newly developed treatment planning system, VQA Plan, for fast-raster scanning of carbon-ion beams

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
In this study, we report our experience in commissioning a commercial treatment planning system (TPS) for fast-raster scanning of carbon-ion beams. This TPS uses an analytical dose calculation algorithm, a pencil-beam model with a triple Gaussian form ...

Limitations in Predicting the Space Radiation Health Risk for Exploration Astronauts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Despite years of research, understanding of the space radiation environment and the risk it poses to long-duration astronauts remains limited. There is a disparity between research results and observed empirical effects seen in human astronaut crews ...

Characterizing Radiation Effectiveness in Ion-Beam Therapy Part II: Microdosimetric Detectors

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2020
The specific advantages of ion beams for application in tumor therapy are attributed to their different macroscopic and microscopic energy deposition pattern as compared to conventional photon radiation.

Radiobiological effects and proton RBE determined by wildtype zebrafish embryos. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
The increasing use of proton radiotherapy during the last decade and the rising number of long-term survivors has given rise to a vital discussion on potential effects on normal tissue.

Mixed- and multi-relative biological effectiveness model simultaneous optimization in carbon ion radiotherapy: A proof-of-concept

open access: yesPhysics and Imaging in Radiation Oncology
Background and purpose: In carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT), different relative biological effectiveness (RBE) models have been used for calculating RBE-weighted dose (DRBE).

Dose–volume constraints for head‐and‐neck cancer in carbon ion radiotherapy: A literature review

open access: yesCancer Medicine, 2023
Background Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has been applied in cancer treatment for over 25 years. However, guidelines for dose–volume constraints have not been established yet.

Clonogenic Survival RBE Calculations in Carbon Ion Therapy: The Importance of the Absolute Values of α and β in the Photon Dose-Response Curve and a Strategy to Mitigate Their Anticorrelation

open access: yesQuantum Beam Science, 2023
The computation of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) is a fundamental step in the planning of cancer radiotherapy treatments with accelerated ions.

Ultrasmall Platinum Nanoparticles for Radiation‐Enhanced Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes a nanomedicine‐based strategy to enhance X‐ray radiotherapy for cancer treatment. Ultrasmall Pt‐NPs exhibit catalase‐like activity that may contribute to modulation of the tumor microenvironment and amplify interactions between radiation and biological matter, leading to increased DNA damage.

Physical characteristics at the turnover-points of relative biological effect (RBE) with linear energy transfer (LET) [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics in Medicine & Biology, 2019
This paper considers the kinematic physical characteristics of ionic beams for maximum relative bio-effectiveness (RBE). RBE studies, based on heterogenous cell survival studies at different laboratories and linear energy transfer (LET) conditions for proton, helium, carbon, neon and argon ions, have been further analysed to determine the LETU values ...

Multicohort Validation of Gut Microbiome Signatures for Cholangiocarcinoma Diagnosis and Functional Characterization of Bifidobacterium Pseudocatenulatum

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study analyzes gut bacteria in cholangiocarcinoma patients, revealing distinct microbial signatures that enable accurate disease detection. Species‐based diagnostic models achieved over 98% accuracy in identifying cholangiocarcinoma and distinguished it from other liver diseases. The research demonstrates that specific beneficial bacteria suppress
