Oxidative Demethylation of DNA and RNA Mediated by Non‐Heme Iron‐Dependent Dioxygenases

Chemistry – An Asian Journal, 2014
AbstractDNA/RNA methylation can be generated by methyltransferases and thus plays a critical role in regulating cellular processes; alternatively, nucleic acid methylation can be produced by methylation agents and is cytotoxic/mutagenic if left unrepaired.

FTO reduces mitochondria and promotes hepatic fat accumulation through RNA demethylation

Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 2018
AbstractFat mass and obesity‐associated protein (FTO) is a RNA demethylase, whether FTO regulates fat metabolism through its demethylation is unclear. The results of this study confirmed that N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) is associated with fat accumulation both in vivo and in vitro.

K88 acetylation of FTO increases its RNA m6A demethylation and promotes tumorigenesis

Oncogene
N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant modification in mRNAs and regulates RNA splicing, stabilization, translation and export. FTO was the first discovered RNA m6A demethylase, and it is frequently dysregulated in cancers and plays important roles in tumorigenesis, cancer cell stemness, immune evasion, metabolic programs and drug resistance ...
