Satellite cells in denervated muscles

Experientia, 1979
It is known that, in a denervated striated muscle, the satellite cells multiply by mitotic division. A liaison between these satellite cells and the Schwann cell in front of the post-synaptic membrane in denervated frog muscle has been observed. It is probable that such cell connections help in the subsistence of the Schwann cell in a denervated muscle.

Isolation and Culture of Mouse Satellite Cells

2010
Muscle tissue culture provides a system for studying the growth and differentiation of muscle cells in a controlled environment. In mature muscle tissue, terminally differentiated myocytes form multinucleate syncytia in which structural and regulatory genes are expressed and the contractile apparatus is assembled.

Control of Satellite Cell Proliferation

1990
Satellite cells are reserve stem cells of adult skeletal muscle and thus represent a potential source of myogenic cells to use in myoblast replacement therapy of neuromuscular disease. Optimal application of this strategy requires knowledge of factors that control the growth and differentiation of satellite cells.

Desmin is present in proliferating rat muscle satellite cells but not in bovine muscle satellite cells

Journal of Cellular Physiology, 1991
AbstractThe presence of desmin was characterized in cultured rat and bovine satellite cells and its potential usefulness as a marker for identifying satellite cells in vitro was evaluated. In primary cultures, positive immunohistochemical staining for desmin and skeletal muscle myosin was observed in rat and bovine myotubes.

Satellite cells, the engines of muscle repair

Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 2011
Satellite cells are a heterogeneous population of stem and progenitor cells that are required for the growth, maintenance and regeneration of skeletal muscle. The transcription factors paired-box 3 (PAX3) and PAX7 have essential and overlapping roles in myogenesis.

Shape of Satellite Cells

1981
The various opinions which have been held on the shape of the satellite cells can be summarized as follows: 1. Satellite cells are laminar elements (Fig. 6) lacking processes (Hannover 1844, Fraentzel 1867, Key and Retzius 1873, Penta 1934, Palumbi 1944), with a regular (Hannover 1844, Penta 1934) or irregular (Fraentzel 1867) polygonal shape.

Structure of Satellite Cells

1981
The plasma membrane of satellite cells appears thinner and less dense than that of the neuron (Figs. 17B, 19B). Similar differences have also been observed in the central nervous system between the plasma membrane of the neuroglial cells and that of the nerve ceEs. By itself, osmium tetroxide probably does not sufficiently stabilize the plasma membrane
