Ovulating Female of Nine‐Spined Sticklebacks (Pungitius sinensis) Are Attracted to Substances Derived From Male Kidneys

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 345, Issue 6, Page 545-553, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Male sticklebacks (Gasterosteidae) produce an adhesive protein called “spiggin” in the tubular epithelial cells of their kidneys, which they use to attach plants or plant debris together and build nesting sites. Spiggin is a glycoprotein excreted in urine.

Parameterizing air–sea CO2 transfer in a macroalgal habitat and assessing its role in marine carbon dioxide removal accounting

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 4, July 2026.
Abstract Accurately quantifying air–sea CO2 exchange remains a central challenge for the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of marine carbon dioxide removal. I apply direct eddy covariance measurements of CO2 fluxes at a macroalgae‐dominated coast to compile the first gas transfer velocity (k660) parameterization for such a habitat.

Decadal Rapid Change in Energetic Carrying Capacity for Juvenile Chum Salmon in the Sanriku Coast

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 545-564, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Adult returns to coastal rivers in Sanriku, located near the southernmost area of chum salmon distribution, have declined since 2010. Climate‐induced fluctuations in juvenile prey availability may affect growth and survival, which are linked to adult returns.

Transmission electron microscopy characterisation of Spirulina bioplastics

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, Volume 303, Issue 1, Page 101-119, July 2026.
Abstract Plastic pollution is impacting global ecosystem health. Bioplastics made from unprocessed biomass, including whole or fragmented tissues, are one potential solution. They are biodegradable and exhibit competitive mechanical performance. Seaweed and microalgae have gained popularity over the last decade as bioplastic feedstocks due to their ...

Fitting in and standing firm: New, alternative women farmers in Australia and the Netherlands

open access: yesSociologia Ruralis, Volume 66, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT How is hegemonic agriculture produced, reproduced and challenged at the mesosocial level? We explore this question by examining the experiences of 37 farmers in Australia and the Netherlands who are ‘other’ in hegemonic agriculture: They are women, new to farming and engaged in alternative agriculture.
