Sialic Acid Linkage Analysis Refines the Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a rather rare but lethal disease that is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage; this is due to a lack of early diagnostic markers. At the time being, less than a quarter of patients are diagnosed when the tumor has not

Ferrets exclusively synthesize Neu5Ac and express naturally humanized influenza A virus receptors [PDF]
Mammals express the sialic acids N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) on cell surfaces, where they act as receptors for pathogens, including influenza A virus (IAV). Neu5Gc is synthesized from Neu5Ac by the enzyme

The Sodium Sialic Acid Symporter From Staphylococcus aureus Has Altered Substrate Specificity
Mammalian cell surfaces are decorated with complex glycoconjugates that terminate with negatively charged sialic acids. Commensal and pathogenic bacteria can use host-derived sialic acids for a competitive advantage, but require a functional sialic acid ...

Mice lacking sialyltransferase ST3Gal-II develop late-onset obesity and insulin resistance [PDF]
Sialyltransferases are a family of 20 gene products in mice and humans that transfer sialic acid from its activated precursor, CMP-sialic acid, to the terminus of glycoprotein and glycolipid acceptors.

Salivary Interleukin 6 and Sialic acid in Periodontitis
Aim: Periodontitis is the major multi –factorial chronic infectious oral diseases in dentate people. Sialic acid regulates innate immunity response that release cytokines.

Background: A key mechanism in the neuromuscular disease GNE myopathy (GNEM) is believed to be that point mutations in the GNE gene impair sialic acid synthesis – maybe due to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase (GNE) activity ...

Gold Nanoparticles Decorated with Sialic Acid Terminated Bi-antennary N-Glycans for the Detection of Influenza Virus at Nanomolar Concentrations [PDF]
Gold nanoparticles decorated with full-length sialic acid terminated complex bi-antennary N-glycans, synthesized with glycans isolated from egg yolk, were used as a sensor for the detection of both recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) and whole influenza A

Sialic Acid Mutarotation Is Catalyzed by the Escherichia coli β-Propeller Protein YjhT [PDF]
The acquisition of host-derived sialic acid is an important virulence factor for some bacterial pathogens, but in vivo this sugar acid is sequestered in sialoconjugates as the {alpha}-anomer.

Clinical application of sialic acid (II) Sialic acid contents in cerebro-spinal fluid of patients suffering from the disease of the central nervous system [PDF]
It is well known that human serum contains some sialic acid and its contents increase markedly in the blood serum of the patients bearing malignant tumors.

Protein O‐glycosylation in the Bacteroidota phylum
Species of the Bacteroidota phylum exhibit a unique O‐glycosylation system. It modifies noncytoplasmic proteins on a specific amino acid motif with a shared glycan core but a species‐specific outer glycan. A locus of multiple glycosyltransferases responsible for the synthesis of the outer glycan has been identified.
