The Multifaceted Activity of the VirF Regulatory Protein in the Shigella Lifestyle [PDF]
Shigella is a highly adapted human pathogen, mainly found in the developing world and causing a severe enteric syndrome. The highly sophisticated infectious strategy of Shigella banks on the capacity to invade the intestinal epithelial barrier and cause ...

Metabolic changes during cardiac regeneration in the axolotl
Abstract Background The axolotl is a prominent model organism of heart regeneration due to its ability to anatomically and functionally repair the heart after an injury that mimics human myocardial infarction. In humans, such an injury leads to permanent scarring. Cardiac regeneration has been linked to metabolism and the oxygenation state, but so far,

Spermidine promotes Bacillus subtilis biofilm formation by activating expression of the matrix regulator slrR [PDF]
Ubiquitous polyamine spermidine is not required for normal planktonic growth of Bacillus subtilis but is essential for robust biofilm formation. However, the structural features of spermidine required for B.

A liquid crystalline phase in spermidine-condensed DNA [PDF]
Over a large range of salt and spermidine concentrations, short DNA fragments precipitated by spermidine (a polyamine) sediment in a pellet from a dilute isotropic supernatant.

This study shows the protective effects of potential probiotic strain of Pediococci strains against diarrheal Escherichia coli strains in Caenorhabditis elegans model system. The E. coli strains resulted in severe morphological and physiological damage to the worm whereas the probiotic interventions were able to reduce these damages.

Evidence for liver metabolism of gut‐derived microbial compounds into beneficial secondary metabolites has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate that Cetobacterium somerae (C. somerae), enriched by mannose supplementation under high‐fat diet conditions, convert arginine into putrescine.
