Sphingomyelinase D, a novel probe for cellular sphingomyelin [PDF]
Sphingomyelin (SM) and free cholesterol (FC) are concentrated in the plasma membranes of eukaryotes; however, the physiological significance of their association is unclear.

Niemann-Pick Type A Disease: Behavior of Neutral Sphingomyelinase and Vitamin D Receptor [PDF]
Sphingomyelinase (SMase) is responsible for the breakdown of sphingomyelin (SM) with production of ceramide. The absence of acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase) causes abnormal synapse formation in Niemann-Pick type A (NPA) disease. Because high levels of ceramide in the NPA brain were demonstrated, the involvement of other SMases were supposed.

Envenomation by Loxosceles species (brown spider) can lead to local dermonecrosis and to serious systemic effects. The main toxic component in the venom of these spiders is sphingomyelinase D (SMase D) and various isoforms of this toxin are present in Loxosceles venoms.

Podocyte-specific acid sphingomyelinase overexpression promotes gasdermin D dependent pyroptosis by impairing autophagic flux during obesity [PDF]
Recent studies suggest that gasdermin D (GSDMD) pore formation contributes to inflammasome-mediated cytokine release and pyroptosis in podocytes under pathological conditions.

Loxosceles venom Sphingomyelinase D activates human blood leukocytes: Role of the complement system
Envenomation by Loxosceles spiders can result in severe systemic and local reactions, which are mainly triggered by Sphingomyelinase D (SMase D), a toxic component of Loxosceles venom. SMase D induces a systemic inflammatory condition similar to the reaction observed during an endotoxic shock.

Membrane structure and the activity of phospholipase and sphingomyelinase D [PDF]
Lipid-modifying enzymes play a vital role in the regulation of lipids as mediators of cell function. One example is the hydrolysis of phospholipids through phospholipase D (PLD), which produces the signalling molecule phosphatidic acid (PA). These processes at lipid membranes can be observed in situ through the application of different biophysical ...

Cathepsin D targeted by acid sphingomyelinase‐derived ceramide [PDF]
Ceramide has been recognized as a common intracellular second messenger for various cytokines, growth factors and other stimuli, such as CD95, chemotherapeutic drugs and stress factors. To understand the role of ceramide during apoptosis and other cellular responses, it is critically important to characterize direct targets of ceramide action.

Saposin D: A sphingomyelinase activator [PDF]
Saposin D, a newly discovered heat-stable, 10 kDa glycoprotein, was isolated from Gaucher spleen and purified to homogeneity. Chemical sequencing from its amino terminus demonstrated colinearity between its amino acid sequence and the deduced amino acid sequence of the fourth domain of prosaposin, the precursor of saposin proteins.
