Negotiating in a Foreign Land: Understanding the Curious Interactions Between Intracellular Mitochondria and Internalized Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Therapeutic nano‐drug delivery systems interact with cellular mitochondria in a multitude of ways. While the complexity of such interactions disrupts the mitochondrial electron transport chain and increases reactive oxygen species production, thereby contributing to nanoparticle toxicity, they also present unique theranostic opportunities in diseases ...

Covalent Attachment of Quaternary Ammonium Group to Geopolymer Surface With Silane Coupling Agent to Enable Simultaneous Adsorption of Cations and Anions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Modification of geopolymer surface with a silane coupling agent containing quaternary ammonium group enables the development of dual‐functioning ion exchanger for both cations and anions. In the present study, the performance of this material was demonstrated for the uptake of ammonium and nitrate from water.

Action of chlorzoxazone on Ca2+movement and viability in human oral cancer cells

open access: yesChinese Journal of Physiology, 2019
Chlorzoxazone is a skeletal muscle relaxant. However, the effect of chlorzoxazone on intracellular Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i) in oral cancer cells is unclear.

N,N-Dimethyl-D-erythro-Sphingosine Inhibits Store-Operated Ca2+ Entry in U937 Monocytes

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2008
Calcium is a ubiquitous second messenger that controls a broad range of cellular functions, and store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) is the primary mechanism of regulated Ca2+ entry in non-excitable immunocytes. In this study, we found that N,N-dimethyl-D-

Additive‐Manufactured, Multifunctional Bioreactor Technology for Dynamic Culture of 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...

STIM1/Orai1-mediated store-operated Ca2+ entry: the tip of the iceberg

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2011
Highly efficient mechanisms regulate intracellular calcium (Ca2+) levels. The recent discovery of new components linking intracellular Ca2+ stores to plasma membrane Ca2+ entry channels has brought new insight into the understanding of Ca2+ homeostasis ...

Flexible Implantable Silicon Carbide Multi‐Electrode Array (MEA) for Cell Multichannel Recording and Cell Ablation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Flexible silicon carbide (SiC) microelectrode arrays enable high‐fidelity, multichannel cell extracellular recording and precise localized ablation. SiC has been extensively evaluated to persist long‐term in chronic physiological conditions while remaining robust, with excellent electrical and electrochemical stability.

Store-operated calcium entry and the localisation of STIM1 and Orai1 proteins in isolated mouse sinoatrial node cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2015
In many nonexcitable and excitable cells, store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) represents an additional pathway for calcium entry upon Ca2+ store depletion.
