Stability of a nonlinear axially moving string

In this paper, a nonlinear axially moving string with the Kelvin-Voigt damping is considered. It is proved that the string is stable, i.e., its transversal displacement converges to zero when the axial speed of the string is less than a certain critical value.

On the Pointwise Stabilization of a String

We consider an initial and boundary value problem the one dimensional wave equation with damping concentrated at an interior point. Our main results assert that the decay rate is uniform for regular initial data and give lower estimates of the decay rate.

Stability of Nonlinear Oscillations of Stretched Strings

The stability of damped forced vibrations and undamped free vibrations of stretched strings is investigated. The regions of stability for the forced vibrations are plotted in the amplitude-frequency plane. It is shown that undamped planar free vibrations are unstable.

Dilaton stabilization in string cosmology. I

A mechanism for stabilization of the dilaton field within the framework of low-energy string gravitation with loop corrections to the dilaton coupling function was proposed in the first part of this paper. The mechanism is based on the assumption that loop corrections generate a singular dilaton kinetic function for a certain value of the dilaton field.
