Desulfation of a fucoidan from Saccharina japonica by treatment with DMSO-MeOH resulted in partial degradation of polymeric molecules by methanolysis giving rise to a mixture of neutral, monosulfated, and disulfated fucooligosaccharides in the form of methyl glycosides. These oligomeric fragments were characterized by ESI-MS and ESI-CID-MS/MS.

The in vitro and in vivo immunoregulatory activity of a water-soluble sulfated fucan AL1-1 from the sea cucumber A. leucoprocta was elucidated. In vitro experiments showed that AL1-1 up-regulated immunostimulatory activities in RAW264.7 cells and that it could successfully promote ROS production and phagocytic activity, increase secretion levels of ...

Use of Sulfated Fucans as Anticoagulant and Antithrombotic Agents: Future Perspectives
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2004Sulfated alpha-L-fucans from brown algae (also known as fucoidan) have complex and heterogeneous structures but recent studies revealed the occurrence of ordered repeat units in the sulfated fucans from several species. Even in these cases, the presence of highly branched portions and the complex distributions of sulfate and acetyl groups highlight the

Polysaccharides from the brown seaweed Padina tetrastromatica: Characterization of a sulfated fucan
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2009Sulfated fucans, the complex polysaccharides from brown seaweeds, possess various biological activities. To understand the structure activity relationship of sulfated fucans, we have investigated the structural features of one such polymer from Padina tetrastromatica using standard methods of carbohydrate structural analysis.

A comprehensive review of sulfated fucan from sea cucumber: Antecedent and prospect
Carbohydrate PolymersSulfated fucan from sea cucumber is mainly consists of L-fucose and sulfate groups. Recent studies have confirmed that the structure of sulfated fucan mainly consists of repeating units, typically tetrasaccharides. However, there is growing evidence indicating the presence of irregular domains with heterogeneous units that have not been extensively ...

Methylation analysis of a fucose-containing, sulfated polysaccharide (C-II), which was isolated from the brown seaweed Ecklonia kurome and has a potent anticoagulant activity, showed the presence of 3-O- and 3,4-O-disubstituted fucopyranosyl residues in addition to small proportions of nonreducing, terminal fucofuranosyl and fucopyranosyl groups, and 2,

AbstractThe sulfated fucan from the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is composed of the repetitive sequence [‐3)‐α‐l‐Fucp‐4( )‐(1‐3)‐α‐l‐Fucp‐2,4‐di( )‐(1‐3)‐α‐l‐Fucp‐2( )‐(1‐3)‐α‐l‐Fucp‐2( )‐(1‐]n. Conformation (of rings and chains) and dynamics of this tetrasaccharide‐repeating sulfated fucan substituted by Na+, Ca2+, and Li+ as counterions have been

Sulfated fucan has gained interest due to its various physiological activities. Endo-1,3-fucanases are valuable tools for investigating the structure and establishing structure-activity relationships of sulfated fucan. However, the substrate recognition mechanism of endo-1,3-fucanases towards sulfated fucan remains unclear, limiting the application of ...

The elucidation of the precise structure of fucan sulfate is essential for understanding the structure-activity relationship and promoting potential biomedical applications. In this work, the structure of a distinct fucan sulfate fraction V (PmFS in Ref 15 and FSV in Ref 16 → PFV) from Pattalus mollis was investigated using an oligosaccharide mapping ...
