Holistic Evaluation of Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes): Unraveling Its Medicinal and Therapeutic Potentials

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 22, Issue 12, December 2025.
Key Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) metabolites and their therapeutic roles. Lentinic acid, shiitakeols A/B, and lanostanoids show anti‐inflammatory activity; lentinan and latcripin derivatives possess anticancer effects; sterols, β‐glucans, and eritadenine are hepatoprotective.

Specificities of Ricinus communis agglutinin 120 interaction with sulfated galactose

open access: yes, 2011
Lectins are used extensively as research tools to detect and target specific oligosaccharide sequences. Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA120) recognizes non-reducing terminal β-d-galactose (Galβ) and its specificities of interactions with neutral and ...

Evolutionary Evidence of Algal Polysaccharide Degradation Acquisition by Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora 9T to Adapt to Macroalgal Niches

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
About half of seaweed biomass is composed of polysaccharides. Most of these complex polymers have a marked polyanionic character. For instance, the red algal cell wall is mainly composed of sulfated galactans, agars and carrageenans, while brown algae ...

Fermentation optimization and enzyme characterization of a new ι-Carrageenase from Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora ASY5

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Biotechnology, 2018
Background: A new ι-carrageenase-producing strain was screened from mangroves and authenticated as Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora ASY5 in our laboratory. The potential application of this new strain was evaluated.

Polysaccharides of the red algae "pterocladia" growing on the lebanese coast: Isolation, structural features with antioxidant and anticoagulant activities

open access: yes, 2012
In addition to their high nutritional value, red algae are of great interest as a source of therapeutic substances. However, despite their abundance on the Lebanese coast red algae have never been studied before.

Purification, cloning, characterization and essential amino acid residues analysis of a new ι-carrageenase from Cellulophaga sp. QY3.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
ι-Carrageenases belong to family 82 of glycoside hydrolases that degrade sulfated galactans in the red algae known as ι-carrageenans. The catalytic mechanism and some substrate-binding residues of family GH82 have been studied but the substrate ...

Bimetallic nanoparticles with sulfated galactan eliminate Vibrio parahaemolyticus in shrimp Penaeus vannamei

open access: yesFish & Shellfish Immunology
Bimetallic (Au/Ag) nanoparticles (BNPs) have shown enhanced antibacterial activity compared to their monometallic counterparts. Sulfated galactans (SG) are a naturally occurring polymer commonly found in red seaweed Gracilaria fisheri. They are biocompatible and biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

Edematogenic activity of a sulfated galactan from the red marine algaeGelidium crinale

open access: yesPharmaceutical Biology, 2012
The red algae Gelidium crinale (Turner) Gaillon (Gelidiaceae), encountered along the Southeast and Northeast Brazilian sea coast, contains a sulfated galactan presenting a similar saccharide backbone compared to λ carrageenan. Inflammatory effects of other galactans were reported, but not for that obtained from G.
