Expression of the thioredoxin system in an in vivo-like cancer cell environment upon auranofin treatment

open access: yes, 2016
As essential elements of the tumor microenvironment, the variable oxygenation state of the tumor tissue, the extracellular matrix (ECM) and different cell types are important determinants of carcinogenesis.

Metabolic mRNA insufficiency of single cells: Implications for drug targeting and resistance

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Because none of the single‐cell mRNA profiles of growing cell populations encoded any pathway towards cell growth, we used cluster‐averaged transcriptomes to estimate protein‐constrained Vmax's and identify (combinations of) subpopulation‐specific targets to overcome drug resistance. Coenzyme A protects against ferroptosis via CoAlation of mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation
The cystine-xCT transporter/glutathione/GPX4 axis is the canonical pathway protecting cells from ferroptosis. Whereas GPX4-targeting ferroptosis-inducing compounds (FINs) act independently of mitochondria, xCT-targeting FINs require mitochondrial lipid ...

Energetic dysregulations in psychotic disorders: Targets for new therapeutics

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The present review synthesizes literature documenting aberrant energy production and use, specifically related to mitochondrial and redox dysregulation, in psychotic disorders. Findings from different levels of investigation—genetic, cellular, and in vivo imaging—converge on aberrant energy metabolism as a hallmark of psychotic disorders.

A comprehensive study on ferredoxin isoforms in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Ferredoxins are small FeS cluster‐containing proteins that play a central role in distributing electrons within the cell. The cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 contains several ferredoxin isoforms and their biophysical properties (UV/Vis and EPR spectra, Em potential), expression patterns, and interactions with the electron donors photosystem I

A comparative analysis of cell death signalling in RNA and DNA virus infections and potential inhibitory strategies

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
RNA and DNA viruses can manipulate host cell death through various mechanisms. RNA viruses (H1N1, SARS‐CoV‐2) induce acute apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis to promote rapid viral transmission and epithelial barrier damage. In contrast, DNA viruses (HSV‐1, EBV) regulate these mechanisms to sustain a lytic‐latency cycle, evade immune response and ...
