Content of total bile acids in blood and bile of laboratory animals
Laboratornye Zhivotnye dlya nauchnych issledovanii (Laboratory Animals for Science), 2023In the human or animal organism, bile acids influence the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and participate in the process of emulsification of food lipids, cholesterol, and fat-soluble vitamins in the intestinal lumen. Most frequently the change in level and composition of lipid acids is associated with pathologies of the hepatobiliary system.

Total serum bile acids and the bile acid profile as tests of liver function
Veterinary Research Communications, 1985Total serum bile acid assay for the evaluation of liver function has been available for many years but its application has been limited primarily by factors such as methodology, equipment and cost. New and improved methods for bile acid assay such as the radioimmunoassay or the hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase techniques have brought the assay for bile ...

Effect of Fasting on Total Bile Acid Levels in Pregnancy
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2020OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences between fasting and nonfasting bile acid levels in asymptomatic and symptomatic pregnant women. METHODS: This is a report of two prospective cohort studies describing bile acid levels in the fasting and nonfasting state in pregnancy.

Cholesterol degradation to bile acids occurs via "classic" or "alternative" bile acid biosynthetic pathways. The aim of this study was to assess the contributions of these two pathways to total bile acid synthesis in vivo.Rats with biliary fistulas were infused with squalestatin for 24 and 48 hours; specific activities of cholesterol 7 alpha ...

Decreased bile acid synthesis with total parenteral nutrition
The American Journal of Surgery, 2007Biliary changes occur in patients on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) predisposing them to gallstones and cholestasis. We hypothesized that patients on TPN, similar to animal models, would have reduced bile acid synthesis.Serum from 13 controls and 17 patients on TPN were collected and tested with HPLC for 7alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one, which has ...

Bile acid composition and esophagitis after total gastrectomy
The American Journal of Surgery, 1982Ten patients who had undergone total or subtotal gastrectomy for carcinoma 1 to 8 years earlier were evaluated in terms of subjective symptoms, endoscopy and the presence of bile in esophagojejunal aspirates obtained by direct aspiration during endoscopy. The concentrations of individual bile acids were determined by means of gas chromatography. Six of

Simplified quantitative determination of total fecal bile acids
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1977To determine total fecal bile acids, these are extracted with diethyl ether after boiling with a solution of potassium hydroxide in ethanediol. After evaporating the ether and dissolving the residue in methanol, the bile acids are directly determined with 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. Values for 9 normals are given.

Determination of total 3α-hydroxy bile acids in serum
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1979The usual techniques for determination to total 3 alpha-hydroxy bile acids in serum involving liquid-solid extraction of the bile acids with the adsorbent XAD-2 and fluorimetric measurement of NADH generated from the reaction with a NAD-linked 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase are evaluated and improved.

TOTAL BILE ACID-CHOLESTEROL RATIO IN HUMAN AND IN CANINE BILE
Archives of Surgery, 1938The mechanism of the precipitation of cholesterol from bile to form gallstones has received increasing attention in recent years. Since the solubility of cholesterol in bile is dependent, to a great extent, on the presence of bile salts, considerable investigation has been directed toward the bile salt-cholesterol ratio in gallbladder bile ...

An automated method for the determination of total bile acids in serum
Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, 1978An automated modification of the earlier described enzymatic methods [10, 12] for the determination of total bile acids in serum is presented. The procedure involves two main steps, the inactivation of unspecific NADH generating enzyme activity in serum, followed by a transformation of the bile acids by a 3α-hydroxysteroid: NAD-oxidoreductase (3α-HSD ...
