Hypertension in obesity: A focus on individualized pharmacotherapy and the role of body composition, on behalf of the European Society of Hypertension Working Group on Diabetes and Metabolic Risk Factors and Working Group on Lifestyle, Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and Adherence

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Hypertension in obesity represents a major global health challenge, closely linked to the global epidemics of obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction. Excess adiposity contributes to elevated blood pressure through multiple, interrelated mechanisms, including activation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, sympathetic nervous system ...

Metabolic abnormalities and reprogramming in cats with naturally occurring hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 1256-1270, April 2025.
Abstract Background and aims The heart is a metabolic organ rich in mitochondria. The failing heart reprograms to utilize different energy substrates, which increase its oxygen consumption. These adaptive changes contribute to increased oxidative stress.

Solving the mysteries of urate transport: structural insights into GLUT9 and URAT1

open access: yesActa Materia Medica
Recent groundbreaking advances in the structural biology of the glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9) and urate transporter 1 (URAT1) have provided critical insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying urate recognition and transport.

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signaling regulates fluid excretion and uric acid metabolism in the mosquito Anopheles gambiae

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signaling via its receptor has integral roles in mosquito physiology, mediating fluid excretion, stimulating hindgut contractions, and in modulating uric acid levels. Together, these results uncover previously unrecognized roles of prostaglandin signaling in osmotic balance and metabolic homeostasis in mosquitoes.

Uric acid causes vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation by entering cells via a functional urate transporter

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Soluble uric acid stimulates vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation by activating mitogen-activated protein kinases, and stimulating COX-2 and PDGF synthesis. The mechanism by which uric acid enters the VSMC is not known.

The Hidden Effects of Company Strikes: Workers Made Idle in UK Engineering and Metalworking From 1920 to 1970

open access: yesLABOUR, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines a neglected aspect of industrial relations: workplace disputes in which workers are incidentally made idle because of strike actions of others. These spillover effects have received little systematic attention despite potentially accounting for a substantial share of the employment consequences of industrial conflict.

Long-term effects of the SLC2A9 G844A and SLC22A12 C246T variants on serum uric acid concentrations in children

open access: yesBMC Pediatrics, 2018
Background We evaluated the effects of two single-nucleotide polymorphisms on UA concentrations in the first decade of life using repeated-measures data.

TMEM16A Ca2+‐activated Cl− channel: Functional interactions with cytoskeletal and membrane‐associated proteins

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The calcium‐activated chloride (ClCa) channel TMEM16A (also known as ANO1) plays critical roles in ion transport, neurotransmission and smooth muscle contraction. Dysregulation of TMEM16A channel activity contributes to the development and progression of various diseases.

Expression, purification, and structural insights for the human uric acid transporter, GLUT9, using the Xenopus laevis oocytes system. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The urate transporter, GLUT9, is responsible for the basolateral transport of urate in the proximal tubule of human kidneys and in the placenta, playing a central role in uric acid homeostasis.

Physiological and anatomical determinants of placental drug transfer

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Fetal exposure to pharmaceuticals and their subsequent clearance back to the maternal circulation are governed by placental transfer. Passive diffusion down a maternal‐to‐fetal concentration gradient is the primary route of fetal drug exposure, with specific compounds undergoing transporter‐mediated transfer.
