Tea (Camellia sinensis) Ameliorates Hyperuricemia via Uric Acid Metabolic Pathways and Gut Microbiota

open access: yes, 2022
Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic disease that threatens human health. Tea is a healthy beverage with an abundance of benefits. This study revealed the uric acid-lowering efficacy of six types of tea water extracts (TWEs) on HUA in mice.

Renal transport of oxalate: Effects of diuretics, uric acid, and calcium

open access: yesKidney International, 1979
Clearance experiments were performed in the rat to examine the effects of diuretics on the renal transport of oxalate. In addition, the effect of infusing either uric acid or calcium on the renal transport of oxalate was examined. During control periods, the fractional excretion of oxalate (FEOx) averaged 118.0 +/- 2.1%.

Metabolic abnormalities and reprogramming in cats with naturally occurring hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 1256-1270, April 2025.
Abstract Background and aims The heart is a metabolic organ rich in mitochondria. The failing heart reprograms to utilize different energy substrates, which increase its oxygen consumption. These adaptive changes contribute to increased oxidative stress.

The effect of urate transporter polymorphisms on uric acid excretion

open access: yes, 2020
Uric acid excretion disorders are the most common cause of primary dysuricemia. The kidneys eliminate two-thirds of uric acid production and the other third is eliminated in the gastrointestinal tract.

Effect of ABCG2 allelic variants on the transport of uric acid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Uric acid is a main metabolite of purine degradation in humans and in higher primates. Its increased plasmatic level is called hyperuricemia and may be the cause of gout and many other similar diseases.

Transport-dependent endocytosis and turnover of a uric acid-xanthine permease

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, 2010
In this work we unmask a novel downregulation mechanism of the uric acid/xanthine transporter UapA, the prototype member of the ubiquitous Nucleobase-Ascorbate Transporter family, directly related to its function. In the presence of substrates, UapA is endocytosed, sorted into the multivesicular body pathway and degraded in vacuoles.

Inherited metabolic epilepsies–established diseases, new approaches

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Inherited metabolic epilepsies (IMEs) represent the inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) in which epilepsy is a prevailing component, often determining other neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with the disorder. The different metabolic pathways affected by individual IMEs are the basis of their rarity and heterogeneity.

Implantable electrochemical sensors for continuous blood monitoring

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Implantable electrochemical sensors enable direct, in situ, and continuous blood monitoring, shifting diagnosis from population‐based averages to dynamic, individualized analysis. This review systematically examines the influence of the unique blood properties on sensor design.

Body‐integrated photonic biosensors: Illuminating the path to active healthcare

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Body‐integrated photonic biosensors are promising tools for active healthcare. These optical devices can be worn, implanted, or swallowed to monitor health signals continuously. This review introduces key sensing modalities, including fluorescence, colorimetry, SPR, LSPR, SERS, and light‐modulating materials.
