Identifying Brazilwood’s Marker Component, Urolithin C, in Historical Textiles by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesHeritage, 2021
The fugitive nature of the colorants obtained from sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) or the South American species commonly known as ‘brazilwoods’ (including other Caesalpinia species and Paubrasilia echinata (Lam.)) makes the identification of ...

Correlation between intestinal microbiota and urolithin metabolism in a human walnut dietary intervention

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
This study is to investigate the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and urine levels of the ellagic acid-derived polyphenols, the urolithins, in a cohort of subjects following a three-week walnut dietary intervention.

Immunomodulatory Role of Urolithin A on Metabolic Diseases [PDF]

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2021
Urolithin A (UroA) is a gut metabolite produced from ellagic acid-containing foods such as pomegranates, berries, and walnuts. UroA is of growing interest due to its therapeutic potential for various metabolic diseases based on immunomodulatory properties.

Urolithin and Reduced Urolithin Derivatives as Potent Inhibitors of Tyrosinase and Melanogenesis: Importance of the 4-Substituted Resorcinol Moiety [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2021
We previously reported (E)-β-phenyl-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl scaffold ((E)-PUSC) played an important role in showing high tyrosinase inhibitory activity and that derivatives with a 4-substituted resorcinol moiety as the β-phenyl group of the scaffold resulted in the greatest tyrosinase inhibitory activity.

Urolithins and intestinal health

open access: yesDrug Discoveries & Therapeutics, 2022
There are trillions of microorganisms in the human intestine. They can react to the intestinal microenvironment by metabolizing food or producing small molecular compounds to affect the host's digestive ability and resist the risk of infection and autoimmune diseases.

Separation of Isomeric Forms of Urolithin Glucuronides Using Supercritical Fluid Chromatography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Urolithins are gut microbiota metabolites produced in humans after consuming foods containing ellagitannins and ellagic acid. Three urolithin metabotypes have been reported for different individuals depending on the final urolithins produced.

Improvement of Urolithin A Yield by In Vitro Cofermentation of Streptococcus thermophilus FUA329 with Human Gut Microbiota from Different Urolithin Metabotypes

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry
Streptococcus thermophilus FUA329 converts ellagic acid (EA) to urolithin A (Uro-A), which is not autonomously converted by the gut microbiota to produce highly bioavailable and multibiologically active Uro-A in urolithin metabotype 0 (UM-0) populations. We consider that Streptococcus thermophilus FUA329 has the potential to be developed as a probiotic.

Mitophagy Activation by Urolithin A to Target Muscle Aging

open access: yesCalcified Tissue International, 2023
AbstractThe age-related loss of skeletal muscle function starts from midlife and if left unaddressed can lead to an impaired quality of life. A growing body of evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction is causally involved with muscle aging. Muscles are tissues with high metabolic requirements, and contain rich mitochondria supply to support ...
