Biosynthesis of very long chain fatty acids in Trypanosoma cruzi

open access: yesParasitology Research, 2014
Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma cruzi showed similar fatty acid (FA) compositions, having a high proportion of unsaturated FAs, mainly 18:2Δ9,12 (23-39%) and 18:1Δ9 (11-17%). C22 polyunsaturated FAs are in significant amounts only in T. brucei (12-20%) but represent a mere 2% of total FAs in T. cruzi.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Practical preparation of unsaturated very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and very-long-chain alkene pollinator attractants

open access: yesScientific Reports
To prepare very-long-chain fatty acids and alkenes (VLCFAs and VLC alkenes) that are known pollinator attractants for sexually deceptive orchids, and biosynthetic precursors thereof, we applied a methodology allowing us to prepare monounsaturated VLCFAs ...

Reassessing very long chain fatty acids elevations: Sitosterolemia as a non-peroxisomal cause

open access: yesMolecular Genetics and Metabolism Reports
Very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are commonly used to diagnose peroxisomal disorders, but elevated levels may also result from other non-peroxisomal causes, leading to diagnostic challenges.

Very long chain n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids bind strongly to liver fatty acid-binding protein

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
Synthesis of n-3 and n-6 very long chain-PUFAs (VLC-PUFAs) from 18-carbon essential fatty acids is differentially regulated. The predominant product arising from n-3 fatty acids is docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3), with the liver serving as the main site ...

Role of MRI in X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy—A case report

open access: yesRadiology Case Reports, 2022
X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy is a rare inherited peroxisomal disorder that occurs due to a genetic mutation. This mutation impairs normal transport of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) into peroxisomes, hence impeding VLCFA breakdown leading to its ...

Biosynthesis of very long chain fatty acids by the sciatic nerve of the rabbit [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1978
The alkanes, a new class of neurolipids, are accumulated in the brain myelin when compared to the other brain subfractions [l--4]. The role of these hydrophobic substances in the myelin formation is far from clear. It appears that alkanes are required for a correct myelination, since the remaining myelin of the Quaking mutant, which bears a defect of ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Impact of fatty acid status on immune function of children in low-income countries.

open access: yes, 2011
In vitro and animal studies point to numerous mechanisms by which fatty acids, especially long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), can modulate the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system.
