Capillary gas-liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric measurement of very long chain (C22 to C26) fatty acids in microliter samples of plasma.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1985
In order to quantify accurately the plasma content of very long chain fatty acids, we have developed a selected ion monitoring gas-liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric micromethod which allows all of these acids (22:0, 24:1, 24:0, 26:1, and 26:0) to

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Allosteric modulation of zinc speciation by fatty acids [PDF]

open access: yes
Background: Serum albumin is the major protein component of blood plasma and is responsible for the circulatory transport of a range of small molecules that include fatty acids, hormones, metal ions and drugs.

Dietary N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids decrease biliary cholesterol saturation in gallstone disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Because fatty acid composition of biliary phospholipids influences cholesterol secretion into bile, we investigated whether replacement of n-1 monounsaturated or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in biliary ...

Esterification of fatty acids at room temperature by chloroform-methanolic HCl–cupric acetate

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1973
A new procedure for the preparation of methyl esters from free fatty acids under mild conditions was investigated. Free fatty acids are dissolved in a mixture of chloroform–methanolic HCl–cupric acetate and kept at room temperature for 30 min for ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Progress towards the production of very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid in transgenic plants: plant metabolic engineering comes of age

open access: yes, 2006
Very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are vital components of the human diet, playing important multiple roles in optimal health and development.

Elongation of very long-chain (>C24) fatty acids in Clarias gariepinus: Cloning, functional characterization and tissue expression of elovl4 elongases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Elongation of very long-chain fatty acid 4 (Elovl4) proteins participate in the biosynthesis of very long-chain (>C24) saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (FA).

Increasing jojoba-like wax ester production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by enhancing very long-chain, monounsaturated fatty acid synthesis

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2019
Background Fatty acids (FAs) with a chain length of more than 18 carbon atoms (> C18) are interesting for the production of specialty compounds derived from these FAs. These compounds include free FAs, like erucic acid (C22:1-Δ13), primary fatty alcohols
