Vimentin Intermediate Filaments Mediate Cell Morphology on Viscoelastic Substrates. [PDF]
The ability of cells to take and change shape is a fundamental feature underlying development, wound repair, and tissue maintenance. Central to this process is physical and signaling interactions between the three cytoskeletal polymeric networks: F-actin,

Continuous self-repair protects vimentin intermediate filaments from fragmentation. [PDF]
International audienceIntermediate filaments are key regulators of cell mechanics. Vimentin, a type of intermediate filament expressed in mesenchymal cells and involved in migration, forms a dense network in the cytoplasm that is constantly remodeling ...

Methods for Determining the Cellular Functions of Vimentin Intermediate Filaments. [PDF]
The type III intermediate filament protein vimentin was once thought to function mainly as a static structural protein in the cytoskeleton of cells of mesenchymal origin. Now, however, vimentin is known to form a dynamic, flexible network that plays an important role in a number of signaling pathways.

Metastasizing cells express the intermediate filament protein vimentin, which is used to diagnose invasive tumors in the clinic. However, the role of vimentin in cell motility, and if the assembly of non-filamentous variants of vimentin into filaments ...

Microtubule-dependent transport and dynamics of vimentin intermediate filaments. [PDF]
We studied two aspects of vimentin intermediate filament dynamics—transport of filaments and subunit exchange. We observed transport of long filaments in the periphery of cells using live-cell structured illumination microscopy. We studied filament transport elsewhere in cells using a photoconvertible-vimentin probe and total internal reflection ...

Role of Intermediate Filaments in Blood–Brain Barrier in Health and Disease
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a highly selective cellular monolayer unique to the microvasculature of the central nervous system (CNS), and it mediates the communication of the CNS with the rest of the body by regulating the passage of molecules into ...

Isolation of the intermediate filament protein vimentin by chromatofocusing [PDF]
A novel, simple and relatively rapid method is described for the isolation of the intermediate‐sized filament protein vimentin from eye lens tissue. Chromatofocusing is applied as the sole purification step. The apparent isoelectric point of the protein in 6 M urea and at 22°C is 4.9.

Engagement of vimentin intermediate filaments in hypotonic stress [PDF]
Abstract Intermediate filaments (IFs) play a key role in the control of cell structure and morphology, cell mechano‐responses, migration, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, the mechanisms regulating IFs organization in motile adhesive cells under certain physical/pathological conditions remain to be fully understood. In this study,

Dynamical organization of vimentin intermediate filaments in living cells revealed by MoNaLISA nanoscopy. [PDF]
Intermediate filaments are intimately involved in the mechanical behavior of cells. Unfortunately, the resolution of optical microscopy limits our understanding of their organization.

The intermediate filament protein vimentin plays a key role in cell signaling and stress sensing, as well as an integrator of cytoskeletal dynamics. The vimentin monomer consists of a central rod-like domain and intrinsically disordered head and tail ...
