Drug Discovery in the Field of β-Lactams: An Academic Perspective

open access: yesAntibiotics
β-Lactams are the most widely prescribed class of antibiotics that inhibit penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), particularly transpeptidases that function in peptidoglycan synthesis.

A structured, behavioural science approach to the preparation of antimicrobial stewardship interventions for companion animal veterinarians

open access: yesVeterinary Record, Volume 198, Issue 12, Page e521-e532, 13–27 June 2026.
Abstract Background A structured, behavioural science approach was adopted to develop antimicrobial stewardship interventions in UK first‐opinion companion animal veterinary practice. The objectives were to identify behavioural targets for intervention and to understand how practice contexts influence these behaviours.

Discovery of Taniborbactam (VNRX-5133): A Broad-Spectrum Serine- and Metallo-β-lactamase Inhibitor for Carbapenem-Resistant Bacterial Infections

open access: yes, 2019
A major resistance mechanism in Gram-negative bacteria is the production of β-lactamase enzymes. Originally recognized for their ability to hydrolyze penicillins, emergent β-lactamases can now confer resistance to other β-lactam drugs, including both ...

Population pharmacokinetic modelling of amoxicillin in human breast milk—A contribution from the ConcePTION project

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 92, Issue 6, Page 1833-1844, June 2026.
Aims Amoxicillin, a widely used β‐lactam antibiotic, requires improved pharmacokinetic characterization during breastfeeding. This study used a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) approach to model amoxicillin concentrations in breast milk, identify variability sources and estimate infant exposure, applying worst‐case scenarios.

Structure-guided drug repurposing identifies aristospan as a potential inhibitor of β-lactamase: insights from virtual screening and molecular dynamics simulations

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
The rise of β-Lactamase mediated antibiotic resistance is a major concern for public health; hence, there is an urgent need to find new treatment approaches.

Fusobacterium nucleatum in cancer: Interactions with microbiota, tumour colonisation and cancer progression

open access: yesClinical and Translational Medicine, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
F. nucleatum colonises tumours through mucosal translocation, adjacent‐tissue migration and hematogenous dissemination. It promotes cancer progression via adhesion, inflammation, immune evasion, epigenetic remodelling and metastasis. Its effects on therapy response are tumour‐context dependent. Microbiome‐guided targeting may enable precision oncology.

Comprehensive screening of potential inhibitors from ZINC15 database for Metallo-L1 Β -Lactamase from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia via in Silico and in vitro approaches

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Background Antibiotic resistance caused by pathogenic microbes have become a serious issue in health field as most of the antibiotics discovered are rendered ineffective for the treatment of numerous microbial infections.

In vitro effects of the new oral β-lactamase inhibitor xeruborbactam in combination with oral β-lactams against clinical Mycobacterium abscessus isolates

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM), particularly Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus (M. abscessus), are increasingly being recognized as etiological agents of NTM pulmonary disease. However, treatment options for M.

Identification of a CTX-M-255 β-lactamase containing a G239S substitution selectively conferring resistance to penicillin/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations

open access: yes
ObjectivesAn Escherichia coli isolate, WGS1363, showed resistance to piperacillin/tazobactam but susceptibility to cephalosporins and contained a previously unrecognized β-lactamase, CTX-M-255, as the only acquired β-lactamase. CTX-M-255 was identical to

Binding Properties of a Peptide Derived from β-Lactamase Inhibitory Protein

open access: yes, 2001
To overcome the antibiotic resistance mechanism mediated by β-lactamases, small-molecule β-lactamase inhibitors, such as clavulanic acid, have been used.
