Statin Therapy Protects White Matter in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Independent of Lipid‐Lowering: Biomarker and Neuroimaging Evidence

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study, through an analysis of neuroimaging markers, biomarkers of white matter damage, and the volume of the hippocampal fimbria (a white matter structure) in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), revealed that the protective effect of statin therapy against white matter damage in CSVD patients is independent of its lipid‐lowering ...

Plasma 24S-hydroxycholesterol levels in elderly subjects with late onset Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia: a case-control study

open access: yesBMC Neurology, 2011
Background In central nervous system cholesterol cannot be degraded but is secreted into circulation predominantly in the form of its polar metabolite 24(S)-hydroxycholesterol (24S-OH-Chol).

Cholesterolomics: An update [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Cholesterolomics can be regarded as the identification and quantification of cholesterol, its precursors post squalene, and metabolites of cholesterol and of its precursors, in a biological sample.

Gut Microbiota and Extraintestinal Cancers: Mechanistic Insights and Microbiome‐Targeted Interventions

open access: yesJGH Open, Volume 10, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The gut microbiota is a dynamic community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea that plays a pivotal role in regulating host immunity, metabolism, and systemic homeostasis. Dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in the microbial composition, is being increasingly recognized as a contributor not only to gastrointestinal cancers but also to

Crossing the barrier: net flux of 27-hydroxycholesterol into the human brain

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2005
Side chain oxidizedoxysterols have a unique ability to traverse lipophilic membranes. We tested thehypothesis that there is a net flux of 27-hydroxycholesterol from the circulationinto the brain using plasma samples collected from the internal jugular ...

A quantitative LC-MS/MS method for analysis of mitochondrial -specific oxysterol metabolism

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2020
Oxysterols are critical regulators of inflammation and cholesterol metabolism in cells. They are oxidation products of cholesterol and may be differentially metabolised in subcellular compartments and in biological fluids.

Pharmacological inhibition of hydroxysteroid 11‐beta dehydrogenase type 1 (11‐βHSD1) after myocardial infarction preserves cardiac function in a translational mini‐pig model

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 10, Page 2236-2255, May 2026.
Abstract Background and Purpose Plasma glucocorticoids increase acutely after MI, thereafter tissue levels are amplified selectively within cells expressing 11‐ßhydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11‐ßHSD1) that regenerates active glucocorticoids from circulating metabolites.

Reduction in Levels of 24S-Hydroxycholesterol by Statin Treatment in Patients With Alzheimer Disease [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Neurology, 2003
The statin treatment of dyslipidemia is associated with a reduced risk of development of Alzheimer disease (AD). The effect may be mediated by a reduction in cholesterol biosynthesis in the brain, by lowering levels of apolipoprotein E (apo E)-containing lipoproteins, or by pleitropic effects such as reduction in beta-amyloid production.

High cholesterol absorption efficiency interferes with bile acid metabolism and cholesterol elimination from the body

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, Volume 299, Issue 5, Page 628-638, May 2026.
Abstract Background Elevated low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol causes atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Variables of whole‐body cholesterol metabolism, for example, high cholesterol absorption efficiency, might also be atherogenic, whereas the role of bile acids is controversial.
